This case I had never heard of

On CNN there’s an open letter to the Cleveland girls by Ronique “Pepper” Smith. She was abducted by her babysitter at the age of four and didn’t get out of the situation until she was twelve. She got a nasty case of PTSD out of the experience, and didn’t reunite with her biological mother until she was well into adulthood.

I don’t know the details of this case and I’m not sure the police even investigated the case at all. The fact that it was 1974 and Ronique appears to be black or biracial probably didn’t help. But even twenty years later, kids have been kidnapped by their baby-sitters and nothing has been done about it.

I saw this on Dateline a few years back if I’m correct. Really sad she was gone for so long.

yes, it was on dateline. She was actually in a good home but Pepper’s bio sister wanted Pepper back so the kidnapper took her from the good family. Later, they found a brother. The sister who wanted Pepper with them felt guilty for doing that to Pepper but the truth is, the kidnapper was the adult and made the choices. I’m sure it will be on again as a rerun… but really sad. The kidnapper died of cancer or something.

Its a confusing case because Pepper was actually adopted and being raised by a loving family. This trashy toothless family friend who I guess had Pepper’s bio sister asked to take her for the weekend and her parents agreed and that was the last time they saw here until she was an adult. the parents claimed to have gone to police several times and they would not do anything because the woman took Pepper with their permission. This woman was a hooker who had no way to take care of these kids and they slept in cars and truck stops. Pepper actually was pulled over at 17 and cited for having no ID and when she went to court she actually told the judge she was not sure of her true identity and that she was taken from her family when she was young. The judge called her story ridiculous but wished her luck. Her and this older sister were in fact bio sisters….and then then found a brother. Pepper and her sister were also reunited with her bio mother before BM died of cancer.
