Kind of a long shot, but maybe he was driving on Catalina Island? I know the schools on the Island are part of Long Beach Unified School District so it’s in the area. You are right that description they gave sounds ridiculous lol.

There is a 14 year waiting list to get permission to have a car on Catalina Island. Everybody walks, although there is a taxi service. I think golf carts and/or electrically powered vehicles are the norm if anyone has powered vehicles… and don’t get me started on the price of gasoline there.

Anyway, he may have been last “seen” off the coast of Long Beach, but his car may be missing and they think it might be related to his disappearance.

Another source has this listed “Details of Disappearance
Vincent Sclafani was last seen aboard navy vessel USS David R Ray (DD 971) off the coast of California on December 6, 1978 at 16.55 hours.”

Drove it into the sea? Two different people? Conflicting LE jurisdictions? I have no idea. OT, I was just wondering today, if they caught John List, why can’t they get Brad Bishop? Or Robert Fisher? I’ve been on the most wanted lists, can you tell?

I don’t see where the CDOJ states that he was driving his car. They just give the vehicle info. I think that Mr. Sclafani had to register his car on the Naval post that he was stationed at. I think the car info was just a FYI, not implying he was last seen driving his car. When my husband was in the US Army in 1982 he had to register our vehicle on every base he was stationed at.

OT: Regarding the FBI’s Most Wanted List: I would love to know where Jason Derek Brown is.

    • Meaghan June 20, 2015 / 3:46 am

I suppose you’re right; it doesn’t actually say he was driving it. But why would they include the vehicle info if he wasn’t?

      • david June 21, 2015 / 8:55 pm

A standard section in NamUs profiles is “Transportation Methods” so I guess many profiles just put vehicle info in by default when it’s available.

  5. Lauren June 19, 2015 / 7:37 pm

So do we know if the car is missing too?

According to her NamUs file MP # 28098 Francine Marie Trimble, 14, a girl you added today.is missing since 12/16/78 from Forestville, California. It’s her companion, Kerry Ann Graham, who’s missing since 12/24/79 from Forestville, California. It’s the discrepancy in dates that’s causing all the trouble.

      Hi Peter.

I’m the one who submitted Francine Trimble into NamUs. What happened was that I when I googled her name, I found a webpage on Project Jason at http://projectjason.org/download/Awareness-Angels-Network/AAN_KerryGraham.pdf which stated that Kerry Graham went missing with another girl who also had not been recovered.

I contacted the Sonoma Sheriff’s Office and although they did Kerry in their system, they had nothing on her missing with another girl. I emailed Kelly Murphy of Project Jason and she told me that she was in contact with Kerry’s family and would get back to me with a name. A little later, she said that the name of the other girl was Francine Trimble and that her family was gone. But when I contacted the Sonoma Sheriff’s Office and the California Department of Justice about Francine, the Sonoma Sheriff’s Office didn’t have her in their system. I assumed that her Francine’s family didn’t report her as a missing person to law enforcement.

A few months later, I checked again for Francine as Kerry’s case was getting more widely known and thought Francine might be entered retroactively because of it. It turns out, she was. However, her missing date was a year apart from when Kerry went missing. I wasn’t sure what to make of that, but thought ith her family gone, that might have been the last confirmed date they could come up with from some other source. Still, I thought I should enter what information I had to NamUs stating that she “may” be with Kerry and let them hash out any inconsistencies with the Sonoma Sheriff’s Office. But it looks like they made little changes with what I sent and the missing dates are still glaringly obvious. Perhaps Francine left earlier, then contacted Kerry a year later and ran off together? I don’t have that information.

It was me her sister that dogged the police for 20 years knowing that they had them already.
I called everyday and left my number and asked them to call me because I am the one that gave her the earrings. Not one time did they call me, not once. It was because of the NMAEC network that got them to accept the DNA so it could be compared. The Sonoma county and Mendocino County sheriffs dropped the ball and NEVER ever called me one time. So anyone else like you that saw the connection THANK YOU!!!!! Kelly

Explanation of why this all started,

    To Carl Koppelman

Carl, am I nuts or are these two cases; Kerry Ann Graham NamUs MP # 22830, and Francine Marie Trimble NamUs MP # 28098, both missing from Forestville, Sonoma County, California worth pursuing in connection with Doe Network 131UFCA,(NamUs case file UP # 10447), and Doe Network 111UMCA, (NamUs case file UP # 10450)?

For years the two unidentified victims were believed to be a adolescent male and female, but are now believed to be 2 females between 10 and 20 years old.

Kerry Ann Graham, 16, was last seen walking downhill from her parents house in Forestville, Sonoma County, California heading to River Road along with a female friend ( now identified as Francine Marie Trimble, 14, ) on Monday December 24, 1979.

Neither girl has been seen or heard from since. If that date is correct there can be no connection with the two Jane Doe’s. as they were found in July of 1979

Here’s the thing, nothing is known about Francine’s case except for one confusing fact. It’s believed that she was in the company of Kerry Ann Graham the day she vanished.

According to Francine’s NamUs profile she was last seen in Forestville, Sonoma County, California on Saturday December 16, 1978, one year earlier.

If the earlier date, “December 16, 1978,” is correct, then Kerry vanished at 15 and it raises the intriguing possibility that the two unidentified adolescents, long believed to be a boy and a girl but now known to be two 10 to 20 year old females found north of Santa Rosa near Highway 20 in Willits, Mendocino County, California on July 8, 1979 could be Francine and Kerry.

What do you think, are they possibly Kerry and Francine?

Kerry Ann Graham; NamUs MP # 22830

Francine Marie Trimble; NamUs MP # 28098 – No picture ( Carl found and provided two pictures today. He also told me the NamUs contact person has already been notified..)

  8. Margie June 20, 2015 / 7:51 am

I think it is strange that Mr. Sclafani’s NamUs info shows a precise time that he was last seen, 16:55, but has zero circumstances. I found his death date, Dec 6, 1978 (the time last seen) on the Calif. Death Index. http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi

Wonder why is is listed as dead but shown as missing by the Navy? I think he jumped overboard from the ship that he was on or was thrown overboard. Navy does not want to admit there was a horrible incident that happened on their watch?

    • Justin June 20, 2015 / 1:38 pm

If he was onboard a Navy vessel, 16:55 (4:55 pm) may have been the time he was relieved from standing a watch. I served in the Coast Guard onboard a couple of ships and they are usually pretty exact with the log entries on when someone was relieved from a watch by another.

    Thanks for your insight Justin!

Kerry and Francine disappeared together. Dec 1978. Kerry was reported as a runaway at that time and she was changed to missing a year later. 1979. As for who did it, the familes would appreciate only factual information and not assumptions based on wild imaginations like accusing them of doing it. If you have even an inkling of proof that happened, please do inform the detective in Ukiah of that. Francine’s parents and brother are deceased. Kerry’s parents are now elderly. Her brother and sister have given all the information they know. Of course they would all like to have this case resolved. Until recently they had no clue what happened to the girls. Always held out hope that they just ran away. It was a different time back then. No Amber alert. No computers. Girls walked to the mall or caught a ride with a friend. People had BBQ parties with their neighbors and friends. Their daughters being murdered was not the first thing that came to mind. Their efforts were focused on finding them. Or waiting for that call or letter from them saying everything was okay. Thank you for caring and not forgetting.

    • kelly February 28, 2018 / 4:07 pm

I, her sister called the sheriffs office everyday for 20 years to tell them these were Kerry and Francine. I gave her the earrings. They never ever called me and it took NMAEC network to make them do the DNA to identify them.
Thank You for your input as well!!!

I just found the story of the missing girls ID on an Australian web site. Maybe I’ve watched too many episodes of Bones, but for the time of discovery it still seems forensic work was sloppy. Were there no photos of the scene where the bones were discovered? Even back then we had microscopes – were there no traces of fingerprints on the tape or plastic? You can’t wipe fingerprints from tape, especially the sticky side! What about other evidence – traces of fibers, hair, etc collected at the site? The remains were only 7 months old and the remains were stored in a cement vault??? Were there no traces of clothing found? Were the victims bound with the tape or the plastic used to smother? Were the bodies partially buried or just dumped? The girls disappeared on Christmas Eve/Day. Who runs away on this special day? If there were no traces of clothing this would appear to be a sex crime. Were any pedophiles questioned? Was there a search for similar crimes in the area?
