Josh is a suspect in Susan’s disappearance and after she went missing he took the kids and moved in with his father, Steve Powell. Later the cops found a huge collection of nude videos and pictures on Steve’s computer, some of them of Susan, some of children, taken without their knowledge. Although Josh hasn’t faced any charges in connection with this, the porn was a factor in the judge’s decision not to let him get custody. The judge won’t even consider changing her mind until Josh undergoes a psycho-sexual evaluation. He does have supervised visitation with the children, twice a week.
I found this editorial about Josh Powell, Susan Powell‘s husband. In the wake of Josh’s father’s child porn and voyeurism arrest, Josh lost custody of his kids to Susan’s parents, Judy and Chuck Cox. At first it was just for a few days until another hearing, but at that hearing they decided to let Susan’s parents keep the boys until November 15 at least. Josh only gets supervised visitation, one day a week.
As the editorial points out, there’s a strong bias towards keeping kids with their bio-parents, and the pedophile grandfather was in jail and therefore out of the picture. The fact that in spite of this Josh still did not get the children back, says a lot for what the judge thought of him. I too found it disturbing that Josh said he would rather have his children be cared for by foster parents (that is, strangers) than live with the Coxes. That hardly sounds like a loving, unselfish father to me.
I wonder how much the children know about the situation, and what their father has told them about Susan and Susan’s parents. They’re only four and six years old now. The judge ordered both children as well as the Coxes to get counseling. That can only be a good thing. The judge also told the Coxes not to say nasty things about Josh in front of the children, but I don’t think they would have anyway. Judy and Chuck have been very cool and restrained about the investigation and Josh in spite of what they’ve been through and the way he’s behaved. They strike me as a very classy couple and the best people to take care of their grandchildren right now.
Following Susan Powell‘s disappearance nearly two years ago, her husband, Josh, moved to Washington with his father, Steve. He took his and Susan’s children with him and wouldn’t allow her side of the family to have any contact with them. Well, as I wrote recently, Steve Powell has been arrested for voyeurism and child porn possession. It doesn’t appear that her children were victims, but some of the photos the police found were of Susan.
Susan’s parents have obtained temporary custody of her sons. I think that’s the best place for them, seeing as how Josh is a suspect — the only suspect, as far as I know — in her disappearance. (For the record, though, Josh has said he knew nothing of his father’s porn collection and will not be bailing him out of jail or letting him come home if he bails himself out.)
Steve had claimed Susan was “flirtatious” with him and that they were in love with each other, but Susan told all her friends she couldn’t stand Steve and that she actually moved to Utah just to get away from him. Her sister-in-law — Steve’s own daughter — was a close friend of Susan and she too has said Steve was really inappropriate towards her. The Examiner has several quotes on this topic from Susan’s friends and from Sandy Crain-Anderson, a friend of Steve’s.
As for Sandy Crain-Anderson’s info, it’s kind of sick:
For about a decade Steve Powell told Sandy that he had been in love with and obsessed with Susan.
“Susan was the focal point of the songs he wrote and that are posted on the Steve Chantrey website. Those are but a few of the many more songs written about Susan,” Sandy said.
“He is pining for a love he never could have,” she said.
“Steve was very proud of his stash of porn magazines he kept in a locked cabinet in his bedroom. He showed them to me when he lived at his previous Puyallup home,” Sandy said.
Last fall Sandy said Steve boasted that he still had the pair of Susan’s very sacred Mormon Temple Garment underwear that he stole from the dirty laundry when she and Josh lived at his house at the beginning of their marriage.
“Not only did he stash her underwear in his locked bedroom cabinet, he said he stashed her pictures, journals, and porn in there too,” Sandy said.
“In fact,” she said, “when police went to search his house last fall they missed it – Steve told me they never even looked in his locked cabinet so he still has her private belongings, including her underwear.
Sandy said she contacted the police several times with this information after Susan disappeared, but they didn’t even get back to her until early this year.
The Examiner also talks about Susan’s father, Chuck Cox, saying he’s shown an admirable degree of restraint in public in spite of the fact that Josh and Steve have been saying all sorts of nasty things about Susan and her family.
Gothamist has much better photos of the seven Nephra Paynes and their sister Nefertiti, who are still missing. According to unnamed sources, the children were taken into care two years ago because their father abused them and their mother neglected them (perhaps by simply allowing the abuse to occur?). They were initially split between two homes. Nefertiti, after she was born last year, was placed in a third.
And, Susan Powell’s father-in-law, Steven Powell, has been hit with some serious charges: possession of child porn, and filming women and girls, including Susan, without their knowledge. This is the same man who claimed Susan was throwing herself at him all the time, while her parents said that in fact HE was hitting on HER and Susan and Josh moved from their Washington home to Utah in part to get away from him. Susan’s sons had been living in Washington with Steven. (I hope they were not in the porn photos, but it seems Steven focused on females.) They are now in foster care and her parents want custody.
Lindquist said Utah police investigating Susan Powell’s disappearance found “thousands of images of females being videotaped without their knowledge, including Susan Powell,” on tapes and disks at his home in an Aug. 25 search.
The videos were found in Steven Powell’s bedroom. “The photographer focuses on the women’s buttocks, breasts,” Lindquist said in a statement. “Many images were of minor females.”
The images included shots of two girls who were as young as 8 and 10 years old at the time, the prosecutor said. Authorities determined that the girls lived near Steven Powell from June 2006 to August 2007.
At Powell’s arraignment, prosecutor Grant Blinn said detectives are still going through the seized items, but so far have found more than 1,000 video files. He said it appeared he had been secretly videotaping girls or women for at least 10 years.
Meanwhile, Susan’s husband, Josh, remains the prime suspect in her disappearance.
