MP of the week: Demetrius Elder

This week’s featured missing person is Demetrius Jermain Elder, a 21-year-old man who disappeared from Dallas, Texas on September 25, 1997. He reportedly disappeared with a friend, Demerick Walker, but I’m not sure if Walker was ever reported missing; I know nothing more about that person.

It looks like foul play, and robbery is a possible motive: Elder’s safety deposit box in his apartment was found empty after his disappearance. He’d recently gotten a five-figure legal settlement, but I’m not sure if the money was in the box, in the bank, or what.

If still alive, Demetrius Elder would be 44 today.

I routinely get the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin and other material sent to me. A recent email included links to a number of stories.

One of them dealt with the disappearance of Asha Degree, from North Carolina. It appears that a retired detective is working the case with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, along with the FBI and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

I knew that they had recovered her backpack. But did not know that it had a concert t-shirt from the boy band “New Kids on the Block”, and a book titled “McElligot’s Pool”, by Dr. Seuss, which did not belong to her. However, it came from her school library.

Also, there is some information that Asha may have been seen entering a dark green in color 1970’s model Lincoln Continental or Ford Thunderbird, with rust around the wheels.

The book and t-shirt that did not belong to her. I wonder if there is a record of who checked the book out at her school library.

Also, who at her school may have attended a concert for this band in the time frame prior to or after her disappearance. Also the bag was found a long way from where she disappeared.

Also, she was upset that she screwed up in a basketball game and her team lost. I am only guessing, was a team member family or someone else upset enough to get even, or whatever.

That book is pretty young for somebody Asha’s age. Younger brother or sister?
Also, the New Kids were a thing ten or twelve years before Asha disappeared. I suppose they might have reunited and done the nostalgia tours, but I’d want to know what tour the shirt was from.

Dawn, thanks for the information. Also, I wonder what condition it was in. Also, could it have been used as something to lure her away.

We periodically hear about men trying to lure young children away by asking them to help look for a puppy. So, maybe the t-shirt might have been a lure.

I wonder if the authorities looked at that angle. I never purchased a concert t-shirt. I have seen a few that covered a whole tour for a particular year.

So, the question would be was the t-shirt be specific for a particular appearance or a 2000 tour.

The shirt seems a pretty poor choice of a lure or attractant if it was one. In 1990, sure, definitely, but it would be unusual for Asha to have even heard about them unless her parents had been fans, and even then …
The t-shirt could have been used for a nightshirt. Especially if it was old. And Asha did disappear during the night.
Concert shirts are overpriced, like most licensed merch. My brother used to have a Kiss concert tee from the mid nineties and it was $35, and that was not even the cheapest shirt on offer at the venue.
I always wondered if Asha was sleepwalking. Sometimes people do very purposeful things in their sleep, and maybe Asha’s sleeping mind thought she was getting ready to go to school or something. She might not come to till she was a good bit away from home and then she might be disorientated and confused. And someone picked her up. Completely by chance, since someone deliberately out hunting for a little kid to kidnap wouldn’t normally be looking for one wandering around the road in the dead of night.

Dawn. I pulled up the article titled “Looking for Asha”. They included a picture of the t-shirt. It has a white background, with red in color short sleeves, collar, and red rounded hem at the bottom.

Then the words “New Kids on the Block” in red letters, above a picture of the band. Below the picture is some sort of red in color image. Then the words concert tonight, then the words “Main Arena 7 PM.

Then five stars below that in a row (red, green, yellow, blue, and another red star.

Which sorts points to it being related to a specific concert. But, I would think it would mention a specific city on the t-shirt. If the concert was here in the Chicago area, they might be at the former Rosemont Horizon, or maybe the Star Plaza in Merrillville. Indiana.

But, maybe for someone in a young girl’s age group, that most likely would be as important as the having a t-shirt with band image on it.

Dawn, there is some thought on some Reddit forums, that the t-shirt was used as a nightshirt. She supposedly attended a sleepover at her older cousin’s house.

In regards to the sleepwalking, I would assume a dose a fresh cool crisp air would have woken her up. There is some back and forth about whether it was raining when she was seen walking along Highway 18, early in the morning.

One commenter mentions a young man as a strong suspect. The young man, was about 19 years old, and connected with two churches, one of which Asha and her family attended.

Also, the church is located on Zion Church Road, which according to the person tied into Highway 18, real close to the upholstery store, where some of her stuff was found.

It appears the backpack or bookbag, was found over a year later. Also, the school library did not keep records for very long, which is a concern.

But, I assume there would be a date of when it was given to a student, simewherevin the book. But, I have taken a book out of a library in a ton of years.

There was a mention that she was reading a book, about two boys who ran away. But then returned. I wonder if any details from the book match to the supposed known details.

“The Whipping Boy: by Sid Fleischman. I read that and my kids did too. It’s a great story, where prince, whose name is Prince Brat, gets bored with palace life and runs off and his whipping boy, who takes punishments for Brat because it’s forbidden to spank the prince, has to go after him because well, if he stays he takes that punishment too. They meet a traveling circus and a pair of outlaws and have a lot of adventures but then come back home gladly.
As for waking up when you hit the cold air, maybe, but maybe not. There’s cases where people haven’t woken up till they’ve gone quite a distance from home and didn’t even wake up when they were walking barefoot in snow or on gravel.
If you wake up a sleepwalker, he’ll usually be groggy and confused and even frightened.

My brother’s Kiss shirt doesn’t have the venue listed on it. The more expensive ones did.

I hope that Asha did not run away to join the circus. But, there are some many issues, with her case

Some comments on Reddit, seem to believe that she pretended to be asleep, so she may have been already dressed, and packed to make her way out of their residence, without making any noise.

Her doing all this seems like it took some planning on her part, or with the assistance of someone. Some of the commenters seem to point at the older cousin and the sleepover. They seem to claim that Asha and her cousin stayed up late, while everyone else was asleep

Of course, we don’t if the police spoke to her cousin about what they may have talked about at the sleepover.

I have read somewhere, that Asha was afraid of the dark. Yet, she packs some stuff, gets dressed and sneaks out of the residence, with waking anyone, turning any lights, etc.

I don’t know why someone would have wrapped up and buried her things. That’s so strange to me. If she was sleep walking she did pre-pack a bag for some reason. It’s very sad she’s been gone over 20 years and they seem to be no further in finding her either. I don’t think she had any history of sleep walking either that I recall reading.
