Asian Pacific American Heritage Month: Neal Boware

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I am profiling one Asian or Pacific Islander MP for every day of the month of May. Today’s case is Neal Louis Boware, a 21-year-old man of African-American and Korean descent. He disappeared from Akron, Ohio on July 24, 2006.

Neal has schizophrenia and is supposed to take medication, but I don’t know whether he was on his meds at the time of his disappearance.

He ran away from his mom and jumped off a bridge; there were railroad tracks below the bridge, and a train was passing on them at the time. Presumably he landed on top of the train, though that’s not really clear. I’m not sure anyone actually saw this happen. No one has seen Neal since.

I looked him up on-line and found a Reddit forum on his case. A woman, identified as Barnfire posted a comment on his case including a picture of the bridge that he jumped from. I agree with her comments, especially him most likely getting hurt when he landed on the train. She even included a link to a picture of the bridge and railroad tracks.T

I think that he could have rolled off the train somewhere along the way. He should have found by now.

I know they can’t be related because of the extreme variations in time, but I can’t help but think of the following Doe Network case when there’s a case of a missing person with possible involvement with train injury:

This poor young man *may* have fallen from a train in Indiana, possibly dying from his injuries at the side of the tracks. Train cases, no matter how tentative the possible train connection, bring me back to him.

Also it doesn’t help that one of the true crime shows (On The Hunt with John Walsh I think) just ran an episode about the eleven immigrants locked into one train car and left to die by their “coyote” smuggler (one of the conspirators still hasn’t been caught; if interested, the victims were fo7nd in Idaho so searching cases there would bring you to it).

Off topic and FYI, the recent Charley update for Maria Moreno has a typo describing her as male under distinguishing characteristics. I wasn’t sure where to mention it so I did so here. Thanks!

And now on topic, I see in this blog entry you mention that he had jumped off the bridge; I knew of his page and had read it before and was confused by this as well as you. What is printed is:

“While his mother was inside making a purchase, Boware ran out and jumped off the east Thornton Street bridge”

Which means that, unless the pharmacy has huge FRONT windows (and I’ve worked with a LOT of pharmacies in my career and I recall none that had the pharmacy counter at the front of the store) with a straight view of her son jumping, AND unless the mother was actually looking through those unlikely windows at the time, she didn’t view his jump. So did someone else? CCTV? Apparently LE isn’t specifying, and with that omission, we do have to wonder if the bridge-jumping detail is true.

If I were a family member or loved one of Neal, and I didn’t actually witness his jumping off this bridge, I’d raise a lot of hell in trying to verify this suggested information and would petition to open the files and records that LE has on this case.

Even if he stated “I’m going to jump off that bridge across the street” and left the pharmacy immediately, that STILL isn’t evidence that he actually did jump.

Just a last thought on this scenario, and I admit it falls into conspiracy theory and possibly overthinking things, but, what was the overall scene of the day and location where Boware supposedly jumped? As in, were any of his friends or acquaintances around and did one or more of them supply the “witness account” that he did jump?

Knowing who supplied that info (the only witness options are: a random stranger witness statement; CCTV that’s verified by LE; or someone KNOWN to Boware who was there) goes a long way here. If it’s a stranger or CCTV, then we probably need to take it as a verified sighting. BUT if it is unverified heresay from anyone who knew him, and there is no objective evidence to back up their claim, then that source becomes a suspect and should be carefully scrutinized.

One more slightly OT comment if it’s okay:

Here are a few Doe Network entries of unidentified remains believed to be Asian, for those of us who not only follow missing persons cases but also follow the unidentified cases:

These are just a few. The one most baffling to me is the third link down, 3UFMT…that’s an unidentified female from Montana. She was determined to likely be Japanese, and she might have been killed by a known serial offender. That she’s gone unidentified for so many years seems odd to me; she would have stood out, I think, in Montana, unless there was/is a significant Asian population in her town there.

…and one possible match between a Charley missing case and a Doe Network find:

I doubt they’re a match due to timing and the likelihood that they’ve already been compared and excluded (which isn’t listed in NAMUS for either entry the last time I checked.)

Meaghan, thank you for letting me post a few Unidentified cases on here, I know that’s not your thing and I don’t want to hijack your blog post and turn it into a Websleuths-style thread. I just think (in this case) it doesn’t hurt that, when you’ve gotten the public’s attention pertaining to certain missing persons, we also piggyback that interest to throw in a link to the unidentified sites. The concurrent exposure can only help. Thanks for all you do!

Missing Mysteries, on the Reddit forum, there is a picture posted of the railroad tracks included with the posting from Barnfire. I seem to remember that his mother stopped in to shop at an Aldi’s store. They were walking home from a doctor’s appointment.

Barnfire was of the opinion that the drop from the bridge was about 15 to 25 feet. I agree that he definitely would have been seriously injured if he ended up on top of a passing train. If anything he would have been thrown off the train.
