Native American Heritage Month: Shrie Rowland

In honor of Native American Heritage Month I’m featuring a Native American missing person for every day in the month of November. Today’s missing person is Shrie Marie Rowland, a fifteen-year-old girl who disappeared from Saratoga Springs, Utah on July 2, 2004. She is classified as a runaway.

I found some obituaries for members of Shrie’s family and deduced that she is of Native American (Sioux) and Puerto Rican descent. I wonder if she really did run away; it’s very uncommon for a runaway to be missing for as long as that.

Maybe it is just my impression, but Native American community seems to have a very high percentage of missing persons

      It’s not just your impression.

There is a high incidence of missing Native-Americans. However, they fall through the cracks, for several reasons. They are not considered an minority in one sense. Also, many of them live on be reservations. I have come across problems with law enforcement jurisdiction issues. Some of these reservations have their own police which come under tribal leadership. So sometimes they can’t make arrests for certain crimes. Also, county and state agencies may not have jurisdiction on reservations.

Also, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has their own police officers, but not enough to cover all the reservations. A number of years ago, the Interior Department, could not explain what happened to millions of dollars, that were supposed to go to Native Americans. Maybe it went to some more important minority. Native Americans, don’t get the needed attention. Illegal aliens are more important in this P.C. time frame.
