Pardon the dust

Yeah, so things have changed over at Charley and…um…all the previous links to casefiles and suchlike no longer work. The casefiles are still there, mind, it’s just the the URLs have changed.

There will be some more changes in the future. A better search, for example. At the moment you can only search for names, but soon there should be a cool search thingy where you can search for all sorts of stuff. Like, say, if you’re trying to match a UID with a tattoo of an eagle, with the upcoming search thingy you should be able to search for “eagle” JUST in the distinguishing characteristics. Etc.

Right now all the photos — including the ones not of the MP — are clustered at the top. This will change also.

As Preston Winfrey said, “Consider this version 1.0 but we have more possibilities.” Other changes may occur in future days, to be announced.

Yeah, when I first saw the new site layout, my initial thought was “What the Hell did you do?!?!?!”

The overall look is much more modern and fresh. I think it looks good!

However, I checked the Etan Patz and Gene Andrew Payne casefile and there seems to be no ‘details of disappearance’ in both. (I use Chrome on a macbook) I guess they are just ‘teething troubles’. Keep up the good work Meaghan!

Yeah, I’m going to have to check every single link and make sure it looks right. Preston is still sanding the rough edges.

Call me old fashion, but at this point, I prefer the old version

I will miss it, but it was not mobile friendly, it was cumbersome to work with and many people complained the background made the text difficult to read.

      • Mion January 11, 2018 / 11:01 am

This is definitely WAY more mobile-friendly. It’ll take a while to get used to the change, but I like it! Can’t wait for the updated search function.

Can I suggest adding a button/option to switch to a layout with white background and black text? I’ve always found it easier on the eyes.

Can’t wait to use it. I have, in many times, wished there were ways to search (boolean would be nice!). Congratulations!

I like the new look but I can’t seem to pull up the resolved cases.

    • Julie January 22, 2018 / 4:02 pm

Same here. Maybe they’re not added yet?

    • Meaghan January 22, 2018 / 4:07 pm

They are not added yet. I’ll see about putting them, and the updates archives, up later. Right now I’m just focused on trying to get all the current cases in order.

    Can’t wait such great news.

I have a request. I really, really love the site — it’s quite nice, actually. My request is could you add a “light mode”? Light text on a dark background (especially bright red text as well) causes eye strain and can be harder to read for people who are partially blind. However a “light mode” (which would feature light background and dark text) would be quite helpful and would ensure that it is accessible to everyone. It *should* be no harder than a little bit of extra code, but I don’t know how simple your new code is.

    • Anka January 11, 2018 / 4:01 pm

Agree with LZ – the text seems to twitch or jump for me now due to the colours, sorry.

    • Catherine January 11, 2018 / 10:03 pm

I agree as well. I have vision problems, and the new colors are very difficult to look at. I would love a light mode if your web man can do that. Thank you for all your work, as always.

Here’s to success with the modernization project! But I’ll plead that ensuring that old URLs redirect to current case file URLs is extremely important for usability purposes, at minimum for the next year or two. Link rot is a significant problem when it comes to resources like The Charley Project that are treated as serious references.

    For those who are unfamiliar:

Thanks for all you do, Meaghan.

    • lz January 11, 2018 / 1:48 pm

Oh, I definitely agree! Link rot is going to be a huge problem with this because of the amount of places that the Charley Project is cited.

      • Meaghan January 11, 2018 / 1:50 pm

I’ll see what I can do.

  9. KEL SMITH January 11, 2018 / 1:32 pm

I love your site. I also wish you had a white background with dark lettering. The black background his hard on the eyes makes my reading your site look much more obvious when i am at work lol.
    Keep up the great work!!

I have been absent for a bit – and I came back on a great day – The New Website! Hooray! Congrats Meaghan – I can’t wait to see where it all goes for you! Very exciting! 🙂

Well i’ll have to get used to it and stuff but really hope the chronological browse feature comes back in full where all the cases are listed by year and browsable. Thats how i used the site rather than searching so i could be exposed to cases i hadnt heard of or couldnt remember the names of.

      • britty brannon January 12, 2018 / 3:37 am

I did but they arent in chronological order anymore. For instance if you click pre 1960s it has one entry for like..1956 then one for 1940 then 1951 etc.And theres only a small amount compared to how many cases were there before. So I was wondering if it will become more cohesive.

      • Meaghan January 12, 2018 / 3:42 am

It will be. It’s buggy at the moment.

      • britty brannon January 12, 2018 / 3:47 am

Alright thank you! Sorry if i sound impatient, i understand its the first few days of the new layout. And I appreciate you and everything you do 🙂

  12. Mischa January 12, 2018 / 12:29 pm

The link from the frontpage to the blog doesn’t work and the link to charley’s facebook page has disappeared.

  13. Cattt January 12, 2018 / 3:54 pm

Thanks for letting us know. I used to read Charley alot online when I worked at night. Im no longer at that job so now I look at it on my phone. Im glad ur making it mobile friendly.

  14. Amber May 7, 2018 / 7:39 pm

Isn’t there a way to make the site mobile-friendly without making it black and red with everything jammed up on the left side? I understand the desire to make things mobile-friendly (even though I don’t use my phone for things like this), but don’t you want it to be computer-screen friendly also? I used to read cases on The Charley Project every few days, but since the change I haven’t been able to look at more than a few cases, and I usually don’t even end up reading them like I used to, I just see the black page and picture collage and then go looking for another source of information elsewhere. But what I really wish I could look at is the old Charley Project page! 😦 Of course, still, thank you for all your amazing work and dedication! You do an incredible job.

    • Amber May 19, 2018 / 1:02 am

Oh my gosh! Just going about my usual, checking for possible updates on missing people, and I absent-mindedly clicked to the Charley Project result even though I’ve been having trouble with the new layout. What a difference the white background makes! I read through, then thought “what website is this? This works.” I’m not a fan of change, so I’ll always miss the look and layout of the old site, but the white background makes it comfortable and readable again. Thank you so much!
