Make-a-List Monday: Female veterans

This CNN article says women comprise only 14.5% of the American armed forces overall. I’ve had several relatives serve in the military, but only one woman: my niece, who is in the Air Force and stationed in Minot, North Dakota right now. (Hi, Ali!) I thought I’d do a list of female veterans from the Charley Project.

Was looking at the Charley Project webpage for David Jines at where it states that a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules looking for him and a Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopter collided in military airspace off the coast of San Clemente Island in California. I’m not sure any of the remains were located.

One of the crewmembers of the Coast Guard HC-130 was Avionics Electrical Technician 2nd Class Monica L. Beacham, aged 29 from Decaturville, Tennessee. She was the radio operator. In her nine years of service, Beacham was awarded two Coast Guard good conduct medals.

A native of Decaturville, Tenn., Beacham is survived by her husband, Seaman Travis Beacham; her daughter, Hailey; her mother, Shirl Jean Merrell; brother, Michael Gipson; and sister, Kelly Johnson.

The missing crew members from the Coast Guard HC-130 were all stationed in Sacramento, Calif., where their aircraft was based.

There are photographs of her at

It’s crazy that a relative Hattie Gertrude Brown’s also went missing. Crazy! And that poor family.
