Select It Sunday: Marble Arvidson

This was suggested by Liza E. way back in January: Marble Ace Arvidson, 17, missing from Brattleboro, Vermont on August 27, 2011.

Marble was classified as a special needs child, but I’m not exactly sure what his special needs were. He was in foster care, but it doesn’t seem to have been a “typical” foster home:  this article says, “Marble lived with a mentor — a legal guardian in his 20s — along with another teenager and that teen’s mentor.” He had some emotional problems and issues with aggression, but he was considered high-functioning and planned to attend college. One of the schools he was looking at was the University of Vermont, and I know you need to be a good student with above-average test scores to get in there.

His case is a strange one because he appears to have simply dropped off the face of the earth. There’s some suggestion that he might have drowned in Hurricane Irene, which was causing raging floods in the area at the time, and that would certainly explain things, but there’s no actual evidence to support this theory as far as I know.

My friend Sean Munger blogged about Marble’s case in 2013. There was an article about Marble published last month, mentioning that it’s now been five years since his disappearance.

One thing your Charley Project profile does not mention is the report that one of the housemates saw Marble answer the door at around 2 p.m. that day, but didn’t recognize the visitor.

Marble had made a date with his girlfriend for 4 that afternoon, so, before leaving with the visitor, he left a note for his housemates saying he’d be back in about 20 minutes. He never returned.

This unknown male visitor is the last person Marble was seen with, an even after the fact he was missing made the news, no one ever came forward claiming to be that male.

^Actually, it does mention all of that.

My guess as to why the mysterious person never came forward was that he was the one who did Marble in?

I’m with you Michael W. No other missing person was reported at that time. I followed this case from the start. My friend Cheri was living in Vermont and met with the aunt and helped distribute flyers. She blogged about it and had a long case thread on her message board. Some local chatter online talked of Marble’s girlfriend’s former boyfriend.

I’m wondering if Marble had any living relatives that he was close to? An aunt or uncle or maybe his parents?

I think his mom lived (and still lives) in Massachusetts. He was raised by his grandparents for the first five or six years of his life, but I don’t know if they’re still living or if he had any family who lived nearby or whom he had a close relationship with.

I do wonder why, if Marble’s mom lived in Massachusetts, it was Vermont children services who had charge of him.

His mother moved to Colorado within a year of his disappearance, irrc, and she still lives in CO per the news link. I believe his aunt lives in Vermont and was the one to initiate the public’s awareness. His mom gave me the impression of being a bit spacey.

Okay, talked with Cheri today and she also met his mother. Said the area has a lot of drug usage/traffic and believes he ran awayand left the state with this other male. Her forum is back up as she paid to renew it for another year. At one piint we posted on her forum that perhaps the serial killer Israel Keyes may have involved.

Sorry for typos, long day, just brought my dad home from the hospital earlier, his fourth stay and surgery since June.

Thank you Diamondlil, I’ll have to check that board out.

I heard the suggestion that Marble’s case may be another one that fits into the Bennington Triangle, a series of mysterious disappearances that also include Paula Welden. It was profiled on William Shatner’s “Weird Or What?” some years ago. There’s also a Michigan triangle. And of course, most everyone knows about the Bermuda Triangle.
