Select It Sunday: Wanda Reine

Mike C. sent in this Sunday selection: Wanda Medeiros Reine, who disappeared from East Falmouth, Massachusetts. (Mike C. also provided an exact date of disappearance for me, which I didn’t have before: March 12, 1971.) So I didn’t have the exact date and still don’t have anything much in the way of a physical description, but her disappearance is hardly lacking in sordid and scandalous details.

Boiled down, it looks like a case of domestic violence turned murder. The prime suspect, Wanda’s husband Melvin Reine Sr., died of Pick’s Disease in 2015.

There’s a book about the case, When Evil Rules: Vengeance and Murder on Cape Cod, about the Reine family’s many criminal misadventures including Wanda’s disappearance and the murder of Melvin’s second wife, Shirley. The library has it. I ought to check it out.

This case has been of personal interest to me for some time. Not only is he the main susprct in Wanda’s disappearance (Likely murder) but also that of Paul Alwardt(Missing March 31, 1978). Paul was supposed to testify in front of a grand jury against Melvin Sr.

He is also suspected in the 1972 murder of 17 year old Charles “Jeffrey” Flanagan who was interested in then 16 year old Shirley Souza(Later Reine). It’s been mentioned that Melvin Sr possibly killed Wanda so he could have relations eventually marry Shirley who was 16 years his junior.

If that wasn’t enough, he also shot a police officer in the face. The officer’s name was john Busby. There’s a documentary about Busby’s story in the documentary The Day We Disappeared told by his daughter.

Do check out ‘When Evil Rules’. The stuff Melvin Reine Sr got away with was ridiculous….
