Select It Sunday: Jackie Boyer

Chosen by Heather, this week’s Select It Sunday case is Jackie Kay Boyer, who vanished from her bedroom in the night, two weeks after her twelfth birthday, in 1980. She disappeared from Windsor, a town in Sonoma County, California. It looks like an abduction to me; there were pry marks on her window, it says. But I have very little information on this case, even after digging through newspaper archives, which is really sad.

Jackie isn’t on the NCMEC site OR on NamUs OR on the California DOJ database, which makes me wonder if her case is even still open anymore — and, if it isn’t, why it was closed. The only photo is black and white and not of the greatest quality — although you do get a pretty good look at her teeth. She had a nice smile.

If she’s still alive, Jackie would be 48 today. But it seems like she would have called home if she could have.

Not so far from the area where Jacee Dugard’s abductor lived. How does the time line work for that?

Sorry to place this in a random spot, but the donations page should be removed. It is not our responsibility to provide you money just so you can make trips to MP events like the one to DC, when you’re actually unemployed. You’ve probably never had a job in your life (and no, sitting on the couch all comfortable all day while browsing and updating MP cases is not a job). I see mentally ill, handicapped people scrubbing floors at McDonald’s, America hires anybody and everybody, so there is no reason why you shouldn’t get your butt up and leave the house and start paying for your own things and be responsible at 30 years old. If you were some kid or needed money for a cause or something serious, I’d give in. But I know people donated so you can afford that trip, and using money for personal use like that is a NO. Maybe if you got yourself worked up and stopped relying on people’s money you wouldn’t have stayed in that sketchy hotel. And with your rants on how messy you leave your house, you might as well be sent off to an elderly home or some special center where you can learn the basics of taking care of YOURSELF. Horrifying that Michael is the only one putting in the effort, actually having a job and probably working 9-5. Seems like you’ve been with him so long because without him there would be no computer to sit in front of, and no roof to relax all day under, wouldn’t there? Even though he let you be emotionally abused by his friend back when you lived with roommates. He probably has no choice other or else you’d go insane. But each to their own. If this is the life you chose and lead then ignore my comment. Toodle loo.

Thank you as always for your heartfelt advice.

    • Jason June 26, 2016 / 10:11 am

Wow. What a jerk-off. Keep doing what you do, Meaghan, you are loved and appreciated. If I had extra cash, I’d donate.

    • Pamela September 22, 2022 / 10:55 pm

      How incredibly inappropriate! Toodle loo!

  3. Jimbo June 26, 2016 / 10:30 am

Wow, looks like someone has a bee in their bonnet. I say keep the donation page and keep up the good work.

  4. Kajina June 26, 2016 / 3:03 pm

Finally someone said it! I wouldn’t have said it as harshly and I really never comment but Keelan does have a point. You need to work for things to earn it, and God forbid if something were to happen or you two were to breakup, you would have no idea on how to be indepedent and acquire any important skills for your life. Of course, that is none of my business, but this is all just very interesting, and shocking in the eyes of a European, and makes me understand why too many Americans are seen as lazy and unemployed by most of the world. No offense, but is the truth that the country is in a pit! keelan wasn’t THAT mean but it makes sense!. But I do say keep the donations page if you wish. I only donate to issues out of people’s control and illnesses, though not someone who chooses to be “money-less” and who has the power to change that! Don’t we all wish to be spoiled!

    • Meaghan June 26, 2016 / 5:27 pm

I certainly hope you aren’t using me as the representation of everyone in America. Neither you or Keelan actually knows me, and Keelan has made several assumptions that are actually incorrect. I don’t need to defend myself to either of you. If you don’t want to donate, don’t do it. Even with the donations I get the site does not by any means pay for itself.

    • Lauren June 26, 2016 / 7:03 pm

Oh good lord…How about those who want to donate can click the button and those who don’t want to donate, do not click on the button?

      • Meaghan June 26, 2016 / 7:11 pm

That’s a great idea! Such a wonderful compromise.

    • Suzie June 26, 2016 / 9:57 pm

Keelan and Kajina sound like people with personal vendettas against Meaghan. The Charley Project is a comprehensive FREE resource that Meaghan has put countless hours into updating. If you don’t want to donate money, fine. But, PLEASE, shut up and enjoy the free resource she’s made available to us. She could have made money off of advertising, but she chose not to. She doesn’t make a show of asking people to donate. You two are obviously fans, because you follow her blog closely enough to know personal details about her. Don’t be rude and presumptuous. And stop being assholes. Thank you. Assholes.

      • Pamela September 22, 2022 / 10:58 pm

        Ditto. Meaghan works very hard!

    • Meaghan March 29, 2017 / 3:31 pm

Re reading this comment after almost a year… God it pisses me off. If you think Americans are lazy and unemployed, you’re just ignorant and prejudiced. Google it — Americans work an average of more hours per week than anyone in Europe and for less benefits. And we are the only developed nation that doesn’t have paid maternity leave. But right, we’re lazy.

Next time you feel like judging me, or my country, get your facts straight.

    • Meaghan February 5, 2018 / 6:11 pm

Interesting that you, too, live in Zurich…

  5. Mischa June 26, 2016 / 4:18 pm

Charley Project is a great contribution to society. Keep up the good work, Meaghan.

  6. libraryjobber June 26, 2016 / 4:47 pm

Keelan, have you been off your meds again? If you don’t want to donate, then don’t. But many people do want to donate, with or without your advice.

BTW, I think running this website is a job. An unpaid full time plus no overtime pay job. With the added fun of dealing with total wack jobs. Keep up the good work Meaghan!

Imo, all of these comments need to be moved to a b!tch it out sniping thread instead of remaining here under the entry for this young girl, Jackie. Show some decorum for the missing and the family. Any comment left that has nothing to do with a cold case or a case back on the news should be left under any of the numerous entries that some have certainly read. Move the comments Meaghan so I can further address these sanctimonious pr!cks.

    • Meaghan June 27, 2016 / 9:39 am

I can’t move them. I can delete them, but I can’t move them to another entry.

  8. Aire June 27, 2016 / 12:24 pm

Man, another mess in the comments section? Guys, guys, calm down. We are making a big mistake here…DO NOT feed the troll! Or trolls, in this case! Keelan and other problematic people post their comments KNOWING they’ll get a bad backlash, I’m pretty sure they’re aware that they’re disliked on Charley, but that gives them a laugh! And they’ll keep coming back and back, posting more comments, because this is entertainment to them. I’ve come across many people like this. It’s crazy.

Next time we see them, just ignore them. Especially you Meaghan, if you can try, because their biggest target seems to be you. But I know it must be irritating to read some BS people write about you. I’m sorry, but you’ve been dealing with it greatly! But in general, I think that if we stop giving them attention, they’ll get bored and eventually leave. This is the only way. It’s sad that a person’s brain functions on negativity…and that someone gets that pissed off over a donation page.

    • hennylee June 28, 2016 / 9:16 am

AMEN!!! Keelan should be one to talk about people and how they spend their life… they keep coming back to the same blog that they clearly don’t like to spout off and start drama… I agree with you… DON’T Feed the trolls!

  9. Tara June 27, 2016 / 6:53 pm

Dear god. It’s not very difficult to either choose to donate or ignore. The website is a free resource for anyone to use. Also, are you missing the obvious fact that Meaghan has spent countless hours on this website? Not to mention the incredible resource Charley has been in solving cold cases & bringing long awaited answers to grieving families. We’re all free to donate or not. Mind your own business.

Final thought – Jackie Boyer deserves more than your thoughtless comments on her blog post.

  10. Kat June 27, 2016 / 10:46 pm

I thought there was a rule now about OT comments or some such. I’ve been out of town a bunch, so I might have it wrong. Agree with Tara……Jackie deserves better, if this much attention was paid to her, maybe there would be a lead now. Also agree with others above…if you don’t like it, don’t do it. Applies to other media as well. Don’t like it? Change the channel, either radio or tv. Some people have too much time on their hands.

  11. hennylee June 28, 2016 / 9:20 am

This is a pretty haunting case… 12 years old disappears and then – nothing – no information anywhere. I hate cases like this – especially ones that involve children… Adults there is always the potential that they have disappeared intentionally – but with children (At least the younger ones) this is less likely the case…. And it would seem someone would want to know the answered.

    • Meaghan June 28, 2016 / 5:26 pm

I’ve got a friend who’s going to check with me and see if the case is even still being investigated or not. If it is, I hope the police add it to NamUs etc.

      • Tara June 28, 2016 / 8:21 pm

I’m so glad to hear that. I did some googling on Jackie after reading this blog post and found nothing. Keeping my fingers crossed that she’s been found since she’s not included on Namus. Hopefully we’ll know more soon. Out of curiosity, where did you initially find the info you do have about her?

      • Meaghan June 28, 2016 / 8:33 pm

        The Doe Network, I think.

      • Justin July 1, 2016 / 2:53 pm

She was on NamUs a long time ago, which is where the photograph and other information came from. Then it was removed or the site made not publicly viewable. Never understood why.

      • Reggie August 4, 2016 / 12:23 am

It’s interesting I looked long into this case earlier this year after randomly coming across it on here. Isn’t much info out there indeed. Very frustrating. The fact that so few details are known about this case ( at least publicly) is to me even more troubling than her disappearance itself. Where is her family?

  12. Monique June 28, 2016 / 11:11 pm

Wow i’m from Windsor and never heard of her which is sad considering this is a small town where everybody knows everybody. It scares me to think one of my neighbors could have done this.. If she was abducted why are the police not investigating? Seems irresponsible.

    • Meaghan June 28, 2016 / 11:14 pm

I really don’t know. I hope I can find out. This girl deserves more than this. She ought to be listed on NamUs at least, and probably the NCMEC as well. If her body’s out there, NamUs is the best tool there is for identifying it.

  13. Gabriel Macias March 26, 2017 / 7:55 pm

I remember this case as Jackie was my friend and would give me bike rides to school EVERYDAY. This happened across the street from the house i grew up in and currently live in today. I dont understand why her case was NEVER given the publicity it deserved. Her case as a parent, has ALWAYS been on my mind. I hope one day there can be closer as well as catching the EVIL person or persons who did this.
