Select It Sunday: Petra Muhammad

This week’s Select It Sunday post, chosen by Jodi H., is Petra Loretta Muhammad, a 30-year-old mother of one who disappeared on January 7, 2006 from Highland Falls, New York.

As in so many cases this one of “suspected spousal snuffage.” (I credit Carl Koppelman with coining that phrase.) Petra was in the process of a divorce at the time of her disappearance, and her relationship with her estranged husband was troubled at best. She was born and raised in the Caribbean and I don’t know if she had any family living nearby.

It’s a sad case, particularly, I suppose, for Petra’s young son, who would probably be in his teens by now.

So how come that police is not suspecting her husband? Doesn’t make much sense to me.

The police seem to be using the word “suspect” a lot less frequently than they used to. They prefer “person of interest” now for some reason. Besides, saying “he has not been identified as a suspect” does not necessarily mean the police think he is innocent. Maybe they’re just not talking.

i rarely say this, but in this case it’s true: if this woman was white, she would have been another lacey peterson. the Whole World would know who she was. what a sad mess.

I’m not sure that’s true. I’ve seen many cases of SSS (suspected spousal snuffage) involving white families that got little or no media attention.
