Make-a-List Monday: GED earners

This list is for MPs who have a GED, short for general education development. For the uninitiated, the GED is a series of tests you can take to get your high school equivalency if you dropped out of high school or got expelled or something.

In theory, if you pass all the exams and get your GED certification, it’s the same as having a high school diploma. You can, for example, enroll in two-year colleges and some four-year colleges with just a GED. However, Wikipedia says “The GED certification itself (i.e., without further post-secondary education or training) does not create the same labor market opportunities available to traditional high school graduates.” And according to this site, opportunities are also extremely limited if GED holders want to enlist in the military, unless they get some college credit first.

So stay in school, kids.

If you are not a high school graduate and have a GED, the military won’t take you anymore unless you have at least 15 college credits. There are exceptions, but you would need to do exceptionally well on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) for them to make one for you… and even then, there are a limited number of slots for GED holders. That is because statistically, those with GED’s or drop-outs fail to fully complete their enlistment at about twice the rate of those with a high school diploma or those with college credits.

IIRC, didn’t Brianna Maitland get her GED right before her disappearance as well?

Yes, Brianna did. She talked about going to a local Community College where she had gotten her GED the day she vanished

I know Brianna did, but I decided not to add her to the list because she’d only taken the tests the day before she vanished and they hadn’t been scored yet or anything; she hadn’t officially been awarded the certificate.

Hey Meagan…Love/addicted to your work here. Just wanted to comment that I was living and studying abroad my first yr of high school. The credits didn’t transfer when we moved back to the U.S., so I simply did the rest of high school normally and took the GED on my 18th birthday right after everyone else graduated. I went on to a regular 4 yr college and then to 3 graduate degrees, including one from Yale. The GED rather than diploma never slowed me down. It was a while ago, of course. I m just saying, finish school, but if u cant do it the regular way for WHATEVER reason, take the GED so u have SOMETHING, then work your tail off! But whatever u do, don’t end up on charley project! 😉

Just happen to be searching for any updates on Jael Hamblen and I happened upon this blog entry. I noticed the investigating agency is Chillicothe police department. I thought this odd since she disappeared from Alaska. Any insight to this? I ask only because I just watched the series of the vanishing woman of Chillicothe, OH. They all disappeared around 2014 (as did Jael)

That was in error — it looks like simply forgot to replace the law enforcement information there. (I start writing a new Charley Project case by just copying an old one and then writing over the old information.) I have replaced Jael’s law enforcement contact with the correct people, the Anchorage PD. Thanks for bringing the issue to my attention.

No problem! Glad I could help. 🙂
