ten years ago i could’ve told you. right now, i’m gonna try and trace my memory, and say that i’m pretty sure it has something to do with the font you’re using. it doesn’t seem to be picking up any punctuation. i _think_ it’s an incompatibility issue with the font used by the website and the one used by your computer. i wish i could tell you better. someone else might be able to add more. for now, try something like helvetica or times—fonts everyone has, no matter the platform or operating system—and see if that helps.

You can always try multiple browsers. I would guess the example above is an example of copy/paste encoding from Microsoft World without turning off the Smart Quote feature. You can read a blog post here:

I remember a couple years back that copy/pasting O’Connor from MS Word into Walmart’s search box would crash the Walmart website.

There might be little than you can do if you seeing this on articles or blog posts that are years old…

captk’s answer points you in the right place. But instead of setting it to “Auto Detect,” choose Unicode UTF-8.

      I am using Unicode UTF-8.

Hmmm…maybe Auto Detect would be a better choice then. I just know that UTF-8 resolved most of these issues for me in the past.

My only other suggestion would be to make sure Chrome is up-to-date. In the Chrome settings, click on “About” on the left, and you’ll see the version number. If your version is out of date, there will be a button to update it.
