Flashback Friday: Mark Peal and Kevin Conner

This week’s Flashback Friday is for friends Mark Peal, 10, and Kevin Lee Conner, 13, who vanished from Port Angeles, Washington on August 26, 1971. The boys were on a camping trip when they went off exploring and never came back. An extensive search turned up nothing and they’re assumed to be dead.

Interesting to note how tall, and how skinny, Kevin is: at thirteen he was 5’10, about average height for a grown man, and weighed just 110 pounds.

I’ve wondered about these two from time to time. Maybe they got in trouble in the water, somehow.

Wow, a memorial service just a month after their disappearance. You don’t hear that often.

It does tend to happen in cases like this where the person got lost in a wilderness area or over water, and chances are well over 99% that they’re dead.

There’s only one missing persons case I have a personal connection to, and it’s tangential: a good friend’s foster mother disappeared in 2002 and was never found. She went out on a hike in the Colorado wilderness while her husband was attending a medical conference, and never came back. They had a memorial service for her at her Indiana hometown a few weeks later. My friend was living in California at the time but flew back to Indiana to attend.

I wonder if his height could be a typo and he was actually 5’0 or 5’1 – like you said that would be VERY tall for that age and very thin for that height. Hmmmm
