Select It Sunday: China Videon

Selected by Angie: China Renee Videon, a sixteen-year-old girl missing from rural Christiana, Tennessee since October 19, 1999. If she’s still alive she’d be 32 years old today.

China’s one of those teenagers who just seems to have vanished into thin air. Her car was found abandoned eight months after her disappearance. No indications that she planned to run away. I don’t know of any direct evidence of a crime either, although it’s entirely possible the police simply haven’t disclosed said evidence. They have publicly stated they think she met with foul play.

Where are you, China?

She had to have met someone at the apartment complex. I’m trying to think back then (1999)… Was she using an IM, like ICQ? I guess we’ll never know.

I have noticed a lot of cases on this site involve the MP’s car being found abandoned at a random apartment complex. This might be a good “make a list Monday” topic.

My take on China Videon’s disappearance.

There is no proof that China was taken by someone she knew and trusted, but the lead cold case detective, Dan Goodwin, and China’s mom, Suzanne Videon, think so.

The fact that she was first labeled a runaway had disastrous results.

She could’ve met someone at the apartment complex, or given someone a ride there, maybe a coworker she knew from her job at the market? Or it could mean nothing, and the car was just ditched there randomly by her or an abductor. So many possibilities.
