Make-a-List Monday: MPs with many siblings

This list is for MPs who have six or more brothers and sisters (half-siblings and adopted siblings count). I’ve got six of my own. The largest family I’ve ever personally encountered (or should I put the word family in quotes?) is this one guy who told me his sailor father had fifteen known children by thirteen women in seven states and three countries. I’m sure there are more people on Charley who could go on this list but I don’t usually know family sizes.

Blues singer Screamin’ Jay Hawkins had an unknown number of children, but it’s at least 50. There was an early episode of the NPR radio show “This American Life” which explored this, called “Jay’s Kids”. The moral and social implications of this would be a different discussion for a different day…

My grandmother was one of sixteen.

My maternal one is one of thirteen. That is a LOT of kids, any way you slice and dice it. My one wears me out some days. I can’t imagine that many children. I guess it is different if everyone is out on the farm but still….guess I’m a bit too modern or something.

Since she was number fourteen, she said they had long ago learned to be laid-back.

I guess you almost have to be. My grandma immigrated (legally) with her sister in the early WWII years. There was one other sister here, who is now long passed, and the two of them, and that’s it. She won’t talk about anyone else left, if there is anyone else. I only know one other brothers name and since my gma is on the young side (95), I doubt there are too many left but I always do wonder if I have other cousins and if there is still a farm………oh well, you have to deal with it I guess.
