Flashback Friday: Jackie Hay

This week’s Flashback Friday case is Jackie Dene Hay, a blonde, blue-eyed five-year-old who disappeared from Topeka, Kansas in September 1981. If still alive, she would be 38 years old today.

I don’t have much on Jackie. I’ve got six photos of her, but most aren’t of the greatest quality, and for some reason the NCMEC has no AP for her. She was last seen wandering away from a park, apparently being followed by a man. The police did pick up and question a suspect, but released him without charge. And there the matter rests, from that day to this. She’s listed as a non-family abduction. The NCMEC notes she could be in Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska or Oklahoma — that is, all the states bordering Kansas. I wonder if there’s a specific reason why they believe she was taken out of state?

She has a small presence on Ancestry.com: there’s a photo of her mother’s gravestone — she died in 2007 — with Jackie’s name and dates on it as well. I guess that means her family believes she’s dead.

Every so often i will watch a TV show or something that reminds me of this case. If this is the same Jackie, my sister was playing with her on the day she went missing. We were all out playing that day. My sister, who would have also been 5 in 1981, blonde hair and hazel eyes may have been one of the last few to have seen Jackie that day. I don’t remember to much as i would have been maybe 6 or 7 years old. I also remember a famous police officer in Topeka, her name or nickname was Patty, and she came to our school several years later. I asked Patty about the case and was told that it was still open and that Jackie had not been found. Many years later i met a guy at a local club who said his last name was Hay or Hayes, i always thought Jackie’s last name was Hayes, but he said that Jackie was his cousin, and that she had never been found. So after watching an episode of Chicago Fire tonight, the thought popped into my head about looking up Jackie’s case and i found this site. I would be interested to know who the guy was that was questioned. If this is the case, i lived in that neighborhood from as early as i remember, definitely from Kindergarten through 5th grade, so possibly i lived there from 1979-1985 in that neighborhood. That is almost all that i remember, except for one more detail, which may have been the corner of where my sister saw her last, which may be what we told the police, but that was a long time ago. I don’t even remember what she looked like, but i do sort of remember were they lived at the time, and had even been in their house once. I guess it is great to see that she has not been forgotten, and having children of my own, its just heartbreaking to even think about it. I was hoping to see some good news, but turns out that it must still be a mystery. Back then, we ran the streets unsupervised and often times far from the house. Further than i let my kids go. It could have easily been my sister that day, which has always been in the back of my mind. That is all i really have to say, other than i hope that she is still alive, and someday the truth will be revealed.
    Respectfully, David
