Select It Sunday: Michael Anthony Hughes

Selected by Lauren: Michael Anthony Hughes, abducted from his school in Choctaw, Oklahoma in 1994. In the extremely unlikely event that he’s still alive, he’d be 26 today.

I can’t even really begin to summarize his case. (Jennifer Marra wrote the casefile that’s on the Charley Project.) It’s about as sordid as I ever heard tell of, and notorious online. This is a case of intergenerational abduction: Michael’s father, Franklin Delano Floyd (who wasn’t his biological father, it turns out, but had believed he was) also apparently kidnapped his mother when she was a child, although he claims she was abandoned by her parents and we might never know because she’s dead and her true identity has never been established. I’ve read the book about it, A Beautiful Child by Matthew Birkbeck.

Yeah.

It’s kind of a long story. And a very sad one.

The bed of heaven to you Micahel, you’re in your mother’s arms now, I pray.

I read the Birkbeck book too; harrowing. What must it have been like to live that life as opposed to just read about it ?

This is probably the most bizarre case I’ve ever heard of!!

I think what bothers me the most is how NOBODY seems to of missed Sharon/Suzanne/Tonya. If she was kidnapped, why is there NO record of it, anywhere? If I had to guess I would guess that her people weren’t any better than Franklin Floyd and just threw her away to him. Maybe I’m wrong but I’m sticking by it.
Another sad thing is that Sharon had some potential. She didn’t fly under the radar in school even though her and Floyd were always moving around. She was a good student and was in ROTC and got a full ride scholarship to college. And those were all things Floyd would have to sign off on as her guardian so it isn’t like he kept her from joining things and do things. If she hadn’t got pregnant I think maybe she’d have been able to get away from Floyd and live a decent life and maybe find out who she realy was.
    She was a pretty girl.

I think her birth name was Rhonda Rene Moore. Rhonda was never reported missing. Her adoptive mom was arrested and sent back to the United States for prostituting on a Military base in Germany. She was supposed to surrender Rhonda upon her return but never did and the sad part…. No one reported her missing or went looking for her. The pics of the girls look so similar and the timing matches up. According to Matt Birkbeck. There has been a recent break in the case and a new DNA test will be done but he’s not able to give details. I hope it sheds light on who she is.

Complete OT here, Richard Flury is listed as 22. I think he was 58 or so.

Appalling case in every way. I haven’t read the book, but I have to wonder what in heck happened to this girl’s family, if she had one. NO ONE has a tale of a missing sister/cousin, etc? Is everyone involved dead? She came from somewhere. It brings to mind several unsavory options. I hope they have DNA and can bring this case to a close, even if Michael’s stays open. It’ll be one step.

http://www.mattbirkbeck.com/blog/finally the author of A Beautiful Child has written a post that he was notified by the FBI that Sharon has been identified by DNA, and that Floyd has admitted to killing Michael. His post explains how Floyd kidnapped Sharon (real name Suzanne Marie Sevakig) and why there was no missing person report.

The accurate spelling of Suzanne Marie’s last name is Savakis – it’s a Greek surname.
