Flashback Friday: Micki West

This week’s Flashback Friday goes to Micki Jo West, a young lady who disappeared 35 years ago yesterday, on September 11, 1979. Jose asked me to write about her.

We pretty much know what happened to Micki: she was murdered by Marvin Lee Irvin, her best friend’s husband. In 1991, twelve years after Micki’s disappearance, Irvin confessed to her murder and to the murders of two other women, saying he’d buried all three bodies in the same cornfield in Highland, Kansas — about 25 miles away from where Micki disappeared, which was St. Joseph, Missouri. A search of the field turned up the bodies of the other victims, Crystal Simmons and Patricia Rose, but no sign of Micki.

As far as I know Mr. Irvin is still rotting in prison. I tried Googling his name but didn’t find anything enlightening, only articles about his old crimes.

It makes me so mad to look into faces of victims like Micki. In her, I see myself: working hard at a job every day and, in her case, having to carry a hammer in her purse daily to protect herself!? Her daily life must have been stressed and scary, literally carrying this baggage around and looking over her shoulder all the time probably getting neck cramps from carrying this heavy object in her purse. Her life was less free because of this monster. All of our lives are less free because these types of monsters are out there. It makes me so mad that he is still sitting around having NOT received justice and the taxpayers are working jobs each day to support his a**. Why is it that our society can put innocent puppies and kittens ‘to sleep’ each day and yet he gets to escape justice? There is something very, very wrong with our criminal “justice” system which is so INJUST! I feel bad for Micki and all the other victims out there who are even yet to be, because of our extremely broken system!

You don’t want a justice system. You want a national slaughterhouse run amok.

Murder is horrible unless it is carried out by the state, then this little thing clicks in our reasoning process that allows us to not only celebrate it, but also demand it.

        Hi CaptK

I understand your cynical take on the death penalty
since our system is so broken that very few sentenced to it
are ever put to death but I’d like to give
justice a chance and see if we could actually accomplish it. I wish people really would ‘demand’ it, since it was voted into law in many states, but is rarely enforced. Sadly, people don’t demand it and have grown cynical like you. You and I are not safe or free in a society where people (like the Ohio
school shooter who escaped yesterday and was caught today) can get out and kill again. I know you are worried about a ‘slaughterhouse amok’ but please try to think about
the horrendous acts carried out against the victims and weigh these higher than your concern for the perpetrators. And realize that, far from a slaughterhouse run amok, we have the exact opposite, and too many people being slaughtered in their homes and neighborhoods and/or going missing and ending up on Charley….

this story was on Unsolved Mysteries. Something about he left notes in a mall to give to police. In the letters he confessed to killing Micki Jo.

Meaghan, any plans to add Cathy Ford (WV) to the site? Just curious.

Eventually. Of course, it seems like everything is “eventually” with me.

No worries. Just wondered if it was on your radar is all :).
