Another “I hate it when this happens” post

The California Department of Justice database is awesome in many ways, but it has some flaws too, just like any other site. I uncovered a major mistake this week: a woman whom, they claim, disappeared from Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a coastal city in central California. For as long as this woman has been on the Charley Project — and that’s been almost ten years — I’d had her listed as missing from there. I had no reason to believe otherwise.

This week I got an email from the missing lady’s daughter and found out that, although she’s FROM Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz County police are investigating her case, she actually disappeared from Alaska. ALASKA. That’s like, thousands of miles away from the stated POD.

Oh, and the photo the CDOJ had up for her until about a month ago wasn’t of her either. They’ve fixed that, but the CDOJ page for her still says she disappeared from Santa Cruz.

While probably of no connection, Alaska is currently exhuming a Jane Doe murder victim to create a facial reconstruction and establish a DNA profile. Nicknamed, Horseshoe Lake Harriet, NamUs UP
    # 12846 had brown hair and is estimated to have stood around 5’4” in life

I doubt if she could be connected to your posters case, especially given the fact this victim is believed to have been in her late teens to early 20’s, best estimate 19 to 20 years old, and no information listed suggests she have given birth.

While she is listed as having been found near Palmer, Alaska my guess is that’s where she was buried. Horseshoe Lake is pretty much in the middle of nowhere and the closest town of note is Wasilla.

Like Eklutna Anne, “Harriet” is believed to be a victim of serial killer Robert Hansen.

Sorry just checked, she was buried at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. Not sure why Palmer, Alaska is listed, maybe that’s where the reporting authority or the Alaska State Police barracks is located

I’m surprised the website even worked for you at all! I don’t live in the United States, but I was born and raised in California, and I keep the occasional eye on MP cases out of the state.

I used to be able to search the website at this address: http://dojapp.doj.ca.gov/missing/default.asp Starting a few months ago (and continuing until today) that particular web page refuses to load for me.

Curiously enough, California Missing Persons home site works: http://oag.ca.gov/missing

But if I go and search for MPs, nothing loads. I’m pretty sure this is a configuration problem on their end. I’ve sent e-mails, including an e-mail to the campaign of Kamala Harris, but i’ve never gotten a response:

I find it kind of ironic that California, home to Facebook, Twitter, and Google, has a very unresponsive MP system.

It be nice if someone were to fix that.

  4. Kenneth Reed's location is wrong September 16, 2014 / 6:20 pm

In the same vein, Kenneth Reed is incorrectly listed places as being missing from Fairfield, CT. He is, in fact, missing from Colchester, CT which is on the other side of the state. (Yeah, I know, it’s Connecticut and it’s a small state, but there’s no way a kid from Colchester would be working at the old Norwichtown Mall.)

It seems that Namus finally got this right, but I hope you’ll fix it on Charley as your database is so important and so much more user friendly for the armchair sleuth than Namus is.

    Thanks for all you do!
