Select It Sunday: Brandon Swanson

Selected by M86: Brandon Victor Swanson, a clean-cut community college student who disappeared under mysterious circumstances from Marshall, Minnesota in May 2008. He went out with a friend to celebrate the end of the school year, and whilst driving home he got his car stuck in a ditch. Brandon called his parents to come help him, but they couldn’t find him. Then suddenly he cursed and the line went dead. When the police found his car, it was over twenty miles from where Brandon had said it was.

There’s no hard evidence of foul play and it sounds like his disappearance could have been an accident of some kind; there was a theory that he accidentally walked into a river. I’ve heard stories about people who walked into telephone poles and the like while talking on cell phones in broad daylight, never mind pitch darkness. But authorities searched the area of the Yellow Medicine River and Mud Creek pretty extensively, and couldn’t find anything. Another problem with the drowning theory: Brandon’s cell phone remained turned on and ringing for two days after his disappearance.

Brandon’s been missing for five and a half years now; his parents keep their porchlight on for him but they no longer believe he’s alive.

He could of dropped his phone on the dry ground before he fell in the river, if that’s what happened to him. Or maybe he fell off a cliff or an enbankment.
Do they know for sure that he was not drinking? B/c the whole thing sounds like he was drunk and didn’t know where he was.

Yeah I agree with Princess Shantae, the fact that he called his parents instead of the police probably indicates that he didn’t want to get a DUI, since the police would have been way better equipped to find him. I wonder why investigators believe he wasn’t drunk?

Did they ever find his phone? You would think they’d be able to use the signal to find out where it was.

I also wonder if he might have gotten hit by a car, if he was walking alongside the road, and the driver maybe took the body with them to cover up the accident. I hope someday answers will surface, in any case.

But who says “Oh sh” when they are hit by a car? I read about this before and always thought he stepped in a muddy hole and couldn’t free himself. Swampy area there.

I also wonder if perhaps a car hit him and then hide his body. He may have seen the car coming toward him and in the moments before, said it. Someone could have moved his car from where he originally had reported where it was. I wonder if his friend was still with him? And how much he may have had to do with it?

I don’t think his car was moved because the police used his cell phone records to find out where it was. The fact that it was nowhere near where he thought it was seems to point more towards him being intoxicated or at least very confused than anything else. And as far as anyone knows, he was alone, and there doesn’t seem to be any reason why he would have concealed the presence of someone else with him.

I’m on the car theory too. My sister almost killed or hurt a girl who had fallen asleep on the road a couple of weeks ago. This was in a rural area and the way she was positioned her black track pants looked like a trashbag. Thankfully my sister decided to drive to the side of the “trashbag” and once she had just passed it she that it was a person. It all ended well with the girl not being hurt and then reunited with her mom but could have been a tragedy.

Reminds me of that other story about a kid who was calling his parents and telling them that he sees the car lights – what was his name?

has a search ever been done around the area he disappeared as to felons that lived in the area? i think if not, it’s a good place to continue the search because it seems the logical thing to do.

I think that that Brandon’s parents deserve to know where he is. I did not know him personally but have heard theories from rumors to actual accounts. I am surprised at the lack of law enforcement in the case of the disappearance of a young adult. I have read the accounts of search and rescue and in this case and think that all of the search efforts have not been exhausted. In the wake of the hunt with John Walsh taking a new look at the Jacob Wetterling case don’t you think that we as a community should look at Brandon’s case with a fresh set of eyes? I can only hope for both Jacob’s parents and Brandon’s parents that they get the answers they are looking for and deserve.
Thank you Wetterling’s for instituting the Amber Alert in MN.
