Make-a-List Monday: Deaf people

People who are deaf or nearly deaf in at least one ear:

Emad Ali Ben-Mrad
Carmen Orduno Carrasco
Keyla Contreras
Wendy Eaton
Porschette Charslyn Evans
Jim Elliott Foster
Jonathan Lewis Ginsburg
Muna Mahamud Haji
Betty McCullough
Winter Angel Rose Parks
Sharice Lorraine Pollard
Lonene Ray Rogers
Phyllis Rome
Rodney Texera
Khoi Dang Vu

With Keyla Contreras, there was a news article that described her as “deaf and mute.” A bunch of commenters on the article were outraged at the term “mute” claiming it meant “stupid.” Uh, no. “Mute” means “silent” or “unable to speak.” The term “dumb” is what they were thinking of; it used to mean “mute” and now means “stupid.”

One time when I was working at Taco Bell back in the 1990s, I was wrapping the burritos, tacos Mexican pizzas and told the bagger that the order was done. Then I heard some customer start yelling “What did you call him? What did you call him?!?” I didn’t know what he was talking about. He started yelling for the manager. Then he insisted that I called the bagger a fagot. The bagger said I didn’t call him one, then the customer started explaining the circumstances and I realized what he was talking about and I said “I told him to BAG IT”. The customer said “Oh”, and I muttered “You idiot” and he said “What did you call me?!?” and the manager sent me in the back before I decked him.

Just Deaf, with a capital D, at least when referring to people. The medical condition is still deaf with a lowercase d.
