A Native American execution

A quite short Executed Today entry by me: Choka Ebin. Almost nothing is known about the man or his crime, but his own relatives did the execution (as the law of the land required), which I thought was kind of interesting.

UPDATE: I shared my entry on Facebook with a former professor of mine, a specialist in Native American history who now teaches at the University of North Dakota. His comment: “Very interesting example of tribal sovereignty. The execution by relatives was done to prevent criminal violence from turning into a tit-for-tat blood feud.” That makes a lot of sense.
