One of the cases I just added to Charley was that of Dale Lafleur, who was last seen driving his Mazda. Mr. Lafleur’s NamUs profile describes it as a “Merlot Mica (Miata)” model. I knew what a Miata was but had never heard of Merlot Mica so I decided to look it up. And it seems that Merlot Mica is a color, a kind of burgundy shade. Yet, all the sources I found, including the NamUs profile, say Dale Lafleur’s car was blue.

Zounds; I am mystified. Am I missing something here? Is the “merlot mica” part just wrong? Perhaps the car WAS merlot mica and got repainted blue later? Thoughts, anyone?

Looks like a cute little car though. The merlot mica color is nice too.

Well, his profile says there’s gray primer on his car. So maybe he was in the process of painting it blue? I wouldn’t drive my car around if the paint job wasn’t finished but I’m particular about that kind of thing, maybe he wasn’t.
Merlot mica is a nice color.
This guy I used to work with had a car that he called Iris. Apparently that was what they told him the paint color was called when he bought it. It was a very bright pink-purple. I don’t think I ever saw a car that color.

Well, at least the guy will probably never lose his car in the parking lot.

Merlot is a darkly blue-colored wine grape, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The thing is the wine is considered a red wine and its color is a dark burgundy. To complicate the matter there are white Merlot wines.

So depending on what the Mazda corporation intended it could be called dark blue, the color of the grape, red, the classification of the wine, or dark burgundy, the true color of the wine.

Images online show that its dark burgundy, but someone not familiar with the car may think it’s blue by looking up the grape. The term Merlot Mica probable means the paint has sparkles mixed into it to give the sports car a shiny appearance similar to the mineral mica. As primer was present its possible the paintjob had faded to the point it looked blue or was being repainted blue at the time Dale Lafleur vanished.

Hi Princess Shantae, The Pontiac Sunbird was offered with a dark purple paintjob which may have been listed as Iris.

      Most mysterious, then.

Hi, the Miata is the make and the colour of the paint is merlot mica as you suspected. He must have been about to /have started painting it another colour. The Mazda miata starts to look shabby at about 10 years old and it’s quite common to repaint at that stage.
