Two Melissa McGuinn articles

Seven-month-old Melissa McGuinn disappeared 24 years ago yesterday, and I found this article and this article about the case. There hasn’t been much publicity about it, although I think there would have been more if she had disappeared in 2012 instead of 1988. Melissa’s mother is still alive and hoping she’ll be found, and she has two brothers (one older, one younger). Her father died in 2008.

It’s a strange one: Melissa’s parents’ mentally disabled roommate, Wanda Reed, took the baby for a walk and came back without her less than ten minutes later. She told at least three different stories, none of them terribly plausible, about what happened, and that’s all anyone knows. Reed has the mental capacity of a four- to seven-year-old and it’s possible she doesn’t even really know what happened. I’m not even going to hazard a guess.

you sort of have to wonder about why they would let her take this baby for a walk unsupervised. Common sense!
However, if, say, she did leave the baby somewhere accidentally, wouldn’t someone have found her and reported it? So it’s most likely a worse fate…

I am sure the parents would not have let her take the baby outside if they had the remotest inkling something so tragic would happen! Let’s not blame the parents. Unfortunately terrible, tragic things like this happen, even with lots of ‘common sense’. There but by the grace of God….you know the rest. Poor parents. Poor baby 

not blaming them, but they have some responsibility here. It’s their child. Maybe this woman seemed harmless, which is understandable. But if you won’t let a little child look after a baby, why would you let an adult who has the mind of a little child look after a baby? That’s what I mean…common sense was lacking here.

There’s a big difference between turning your back for a minute and the kid falls in the pool or runs out in the street and letting a very retarded person take a totally helpless baby for a walk unsupervised. It’s about like leaving that same baby home alone with a real 4yo. Its beyond just a mistake any parent could make.

Wanda Reed’s husband, anyway, was under the impression that his wife functioned at an adolescent level. It wasn’t until after her arrest that she got examined and everyone found out just how disabled she really was.

You have to wonder what kind of guy marries and has children with a woman that disabled. But maybe he had issues too?

yes! wow, after all this time. I hope they find the killer.

How does a mentally disabled woman with a mentality of a 4 year old even care for her own baby? The article didnt say whatever happened to her own child. It sounds illegal for a man to have sex with a woman who was that mentally disabled I mean she clearly cannot consent to sex or anything else. How confusing. Cute little baby though.

Since Mom was sent to a group home, chances are the baby was either left with Dad or placed in foster care.

I hate too see so many people say the parents were at some fault.. Put your self in there shoes for a moment if you trusted someone you would let them take you daughter for a walk ecspecially knowing she had a son her self knowing what it would feel like if she lost her son she would feel the same way Melissa’s mother would feel so the mother OBVIOUSLY didn’t have a thought in her mind she was never going to see her daughter please think before you think if this was your daughter would you want people blaming you??
