My friend Muertos has written a blog entry about several MPs who are profiled on the Charley Project: Jovanna Stacey Crawford, Peter Kema Jr., Benjamin Joseph Bearrick, Michael Timothy Palmer and his brother Charles “Chucky” Palmer V (they disappeared under much different circumstances, years apart) and Bonita Mara Bickwit and Mitchel Fred Weiser (teen hippie lovebirds who vanished together in 1973).

This blog post is the third in a series on missing persons. Muertos’s Twitter account also links to a different Charley Project disappearance every day.

I looked at the teen hippie lovebirds, thinking they might match the two UID kids from california, but no.

In Mike Echols’s book about the Steven Stayner case he mentioned those two kids (the UIDs that is) and said Ken Parnell insinuated he might know something about who they were and who killed them.

did he ever say anything else? Parnell is dead now so if he did know anything, he ain’t talking now. I doubt anyone will ever find out who killed them after all this time, and whoever did it is probably also dead. I think at this point the only thing is to find out who those kids are.

Nothing else that I recall. Just something like, “I used to know who killed those kids but I’ve forgotten” or something like that. I think he was full of it.

        Yes, I know.

Speaking of those “two UIDs from California” — it’s always bothered me that there’s this assumption that simply because of DNA evidence, they couldn’t possibly be siblings. Who knows? Maybe they were both adopted siblings or one of them was adopted and the other biological? I hope the new technologies they’re using to create updated reconstructions of these two deceased young people can help provoke someone’s memory and we can eventually find out who these two young people really were. But until then, we should keep open the possibility that they were brother and sister, as well as other possibilities (they were just two close friends, they were in a relationship together, etc.).

I desperately wish Bonita Bickwit and Mitchel Weiser could be found alive, but I know the chances of that are extremely slim to none at this point. 😦 And I feel a kinship with these two kids, being that I’m completely obsessed with the ’70s and I would have loved to have been born in 1958 (the year Bonita was born) and experience life as a ’70s teen. I’ve grown my hair out long just like a ’70s teen would’ve (it somewhat resembles Bonita’s, in fact), listen to a LOT of ’70s music, search for all sorts of ’70s things on YouTube and Google, pore over old ’70s catalogues, try to imagine how life must’ve been in the ’70s, etc. I like the ’80s and ’90s too, but the ’70s are my favorite decade, even though I wasn’t even born until the very tail end of the ’70s.

Anyway, Bonita and Mitchel are thus extremely close to my heart, esp since they were trying to get to Watkins Glen, which was one of THE pop cultural moments of the ’70s (and I enjoy the music of the Grateful Dead), they were good, intelligent kids, and they seemed like they were so much in love with each other. I hate that the police seemed not to care about these kids and that they were partly responsible for why no one knows what happened to Bonnie or Mitchel. And I hope that if some harm came to them, that they were at least allowed to be buried together so they could be together forever. Wherever they are.

Hey – did I read somewhere that there was talk about a serial killer who used Grateful Dead concerts to pick up victims? Did any of you guys hear about that??
