Elizabeth Smart to marry

Per ABC News and loads of other news outlets: Elizabeth Smart has gotten engaged to marry. Many of the articles don’t name the suitor, but The Daily Mail (perhaps not the most reliable source?) says he’s Matthew Gilmour, age 21, from Scotland. They plan to marry in the summer.

All the best to her; I hope this marriage works out. She is a very strong, resilient young woman who has been through a lot.

Best of luck to them both.
I do wish somebody’d help her update her looka little bit. Those headbands and pearls make her look like a Nancy Reagan wannabe.

I think all Mormon women dress like that.

I think that this is great. She’s going to make a great wife. And maybe a great mother someday.

How wonderful for her! What an amazing young woman.

No, all Mormon women do not dress like that. Way to stereotype.

My remark was actually meant to be somewhat facetious — sorry it came off wrong.

Though, looking at the dress code for BYU and like places, I wonder where they get their clothes. I dress quite conservatively (Michael is always begging me to put on something that’s just a little bit sexy, please?) but I don’t think most of my outfits, especially summer ones, would conform to what they want female students to wear.

I got that you were being facetious 

I think she’s going for more of a ‘rich and powerful’ look

Huh. I’ve been a Mormon my whole life, and I didn’t realize all Mormon women dressed that way. I guess I was wrong; learn something new every day.

I was going to say, I know several Mormon women and I can only think of one that dresses kinda like Elizabeth does…she’s around 60 and is a principal at a high school. Not a 24yo girl who sometimes does a celebrfity guest spot on the news.
She’s a pretty girl, but that baby face and those freckles realy don’t go with the style she is trying to wear. There’s ways to dress modestly and professionally without looking like you raided Grandma’s closet.

Yes her clothing’s not great but I thought we shouldn’t forget she’s a rape victim. I think many rape victims tend to dress in a protective/unattractive way. They feel the need to protect their body and also not to take the risk to attract another perv. So it could explain the way she dresses. Also, the necklace/pearls could come from a family member, after having been far from her family for long months when she was kidnapped she might like this kind of connection.

I think she’s rather young to marry otherwise. But I’m glad she manages to get life going on. And wish her the best.

Now, marrying young IS a Mormon thing. She’s just about the typical age that most Mormon women tie the knot.

This is remarkably true. I’m continually shocked by how young most Mormon women are when they get married. I’m, like, they’re still babies! They’re still supposed to be figuring out who they are as individuals. *shrug* Oh well. Maybe that’s the whole point or something.

BTW, Elizabeth Smart’s one of those rare less-than-a-handful of Mormon women who doesn’t have a sickeningly OTT sugary sweet personality. I imagine that’s because there’s still a sea of inner mental troubles from her sexual abuse at the hands of her captor that she’s still dealing with. But it also makes her more relatable and likeable and I hope she holds onto her present personality, even as she works through those inner wounds she carries inside.

Oh, and going back to what Meyah said, that’s a remarkable observation. It does make sense that Ms. Smart would want to dress like a fiftysomething because of the rape trauma she suffered for some nine months. It would be similar to seeing pictures of Jaycee Dugard and seeing her look like a dowdy middle-aged sweatsuit-wearing housewife. It’s that “protective/unattractive” way of dressing that would cover “the need to protect their body and also not to take the risk to attract another perv”.

She’s not realy that young to gbet married. By the time the wedding happens she’ll be like 25. Her boyfriend is pretty young though.

So Diane: spend a lot of time around Mormon women? Because I have, and do, and while I can appreciate your characterization of some of them as “sickeningly OTT yada yada”, by no means are most of them that way. Interesting.
