Article about unidentified DeKalb County, GA boy

Found this article about a five- to seven-year-old boy whose body was found in DeKalb County, Georgia back in 1999. They still have no idea who he is, but have named him Dennis.

Toxicology reports found acetaminophen and anti-nausea medicine in Dennis’ system.

“This child appeared to be well cared for,” said forensic investigator Greg Johns said. “And for him to just be dumped out like that and all these years with nobody coming by, it just makes it that much more unusual.”

I should note here that the kid was wearing Timberland boots. Timberland is not a cheap brand. Their website says kid-sized boots cost about $80 a pair, depending on the model — and this for a shoe the child will outgrow in six months or a year.

The medical examiner’s analysis in 1999 found no signs of trauma and no cause of death could be determined. Investigators believe the remains were in the woods for three to six months before they were found, putting the possible date of the death late in 1998.

It reminds me a lot of the Boy in the Box case. I think chances are “Dennis” was never reported missing. As I’ve noted before, it’s sickeningly easy to conceal a child’s disappearance for years.

It makes me sick that somebody would “care” enough to buy a little kid expensive boots like that, like you said that he would grow out of in no time, but not care enough to see he got a decent burial and not be just dumped in the woods like a dog.

Proof enough (if more were needed) that affluence does not a good parent make.

(Okay, I’m just assuming Dennis was killed by his parents, but let’s face it, he probably was.)

If the family was rich though, people would be more likely to notice he was missing.
Could be the boots got bought out of somebody’s car trunk, or like in the Sopranos, they “fell off a truck.”

I actually contacted the police about this child in 1999 or 2000 as he (and the circumstances of his death and his clothing) very closely resembled one of my students. I had a student that wore those exact boots and was always impeccably dressed. Then one day his abusive father (yes I reported him) abruptly withdrew him from school and we never heard from him again. The withdrawal date was within a few weeks of the estimated death date. It’s been more than 10 years and the details are very foggy. I sincerely hope this isn’t my sweet student. But he was somebody’s student, child, cousin, friend. I wish they could identify him and give him back his name.

    Angela S,

I am the DeKalb ME Investigator on this case. Please call the DeKalb County ME Office at 404-508-3500. Ask for Chief Bailey or Inv. Gochenouer. We need to follow up on the information we have, if we have not already done so.
    Thank you.
