Still hanging

The longer I go without updating, the more stuff piles up. The more it piles up, the more discouraged I get, the less point there seems to be in updating. This month I’ve been avoiding the computer altogether for four or five days at a time — something I haven’t done since I got my first computer when I was about eight years old — and then logging on, taking care of the 150 or so emails that have accumulated, and logging off again.

I must get off this vicious never-ending cycle.

And on top of it all my health sucks, my relationship with Michael sucks, my life in general sucks. *goes out into the rain to scrub crap off a rat cage*

One thing that doesn’t suck, though, is your site. It is invaluable, and always will be, to those of us who are intensely interested in missing persons.

You are very good at what you do, whether it is done in occurrences that are four days apart, or four minutes apart.

Meaghan, people will ALWAYS go missing. You are never going to catch up unless you are hooked up to NCIC and have a program that automatically adds new entries that have been missing six months or more to the Charley Project.

Furthermore, no expects you to update everything you have as soon as you get it. You’re not on a schedule, being graded or judged here. You’re one person attempting to keep files on thousands of missing persons and you give more detail than almost all of the different missing persons websites around. NamUs has a large paid staff that law enforcement seeks out to post their MP and you have to look them up on your own. Give yourself some credit for doing the almost impossible without any support, plus you have medical problems that would probably make me consider suicide if I had them myself. Don’t beat yourself up because you’re not making the absolute most possible with your time. I still don’t know how you do it. Half the time, I’m expecting that you’re going to put in a notice that you’ve had enough of missing persons and are turning your site over to someone else.

Pace yourself. Set aside some to do five or six updates or new entries every few days if that makes you feel like you’re making progress, which is actually the truth. They don’t have to be complete in-depth updates. It’s not all or nothing.

What a nice guy you are, Justin! You sound like such a reasonable, reassuring person. I second your comments completely.

Meghan – you have chronic pain. This is a terrible thing to live with. It doesn’t go away and it doesn’t stop.

Cut yourself a break. No one who is a regular of Charley will get mad if you don’t update X number of cases a day/week/month/year.

I’m sure if you needed to take a break to work on your life not one of the regulars would say oh that is terrible. This isn’t a paid gig. It is a hobby. Don’t let it consume you.

You deserve to be healthy and happy, Meaghan. The project can wait. Your readers can wait. Be good to yourself and regain your
health. Life needs balance in all things.

Have you ever considered getting someone to help you?

Meghan why not take a break from updating trying to update the site? You’re flustered and that won’t help you or the site. Updates can wait but your health can’t.

I think you need to find someone to help you. You are amazing, but I also think in light of your health, you might need to find one person who can at least assist you in someway. That is not because I think any less of you- it’s because you have to get your health in order. Take this from the person who isn’t teaching this year, for the first time in 16 years, because she didn’t heed her own advice.

If you want/need some help, contact me at I’d love to help you in any way you need. We need to get you well, because we need you and the world would be pretty dismal without you!
