What gets me is that people hired by the bank went inside and took pictures of her stuff. They took pictures of her car. That happened twice. “Diligent search and inquiry,” they wrote. “Confirmed residence is unoccupied.”

They did a completely incompetant job.

That being said, I know how easy it is for people to lapse into a really wierd mindset when they don’t have other people around to adjust their behavior. If you start shunning the company of others and isolate yourself for a long time, you can get seriouly paranoid and crazy. It happened to me, but on a lesser extent.

Ever heard of the term hikikomori? You should look it up.

    Very sad indeed.

Yes, extremely sad. Is it wrong of me to wonder what happened to her cats?

I wondered that too, Laura! I hope they were able to get out (cat door, maybe?) and survive. That poor, poor woman. This story was very well written and so sad. Thanks for sharing it, Meaghan.

Turns out the author of the article is on Twitter, so I asked him. He said nobody knows for sure what happened to her pets.

I have been thinking of this article ever since I read it.

I had the same thought about how beautifully written that was. Almost to the point of perhaps blunting the awfulness of the story.

And as far as them photographing her car, it says in the story that her body was on the floor of the car and only her legs were on the seat- so I would not be too harsh. I’m pretty certain the bank person took the photo from the door to the garage. After all, this part of Florida has an unbelievably high number of homes/condos that ARE just walked away from. We’re not talking about law enforcement, we’re talking a bout a guy sent to document with a few pictures, whether or not a property looks abandoned.
