Gossip on the internet

I got an email today from a woman affiliated with another site, which is not about missing people but does talk about some of them. Members of the public can add material. Anyway, she very defensive, claiming I had accused her site of “stealing” my work and they were just trying to spread awareness, etc. And she said she would remove some Charley writings from a certain page and put up a notice saying I’d asked her to.

I’m a bit flabbergasted. I was aware that some Charley Project material was on that site, but I didn’t care much because it usually included a note as to the source. I don’t mind if you copy my work, as long as you credit me with it. To my knowledge I never complained to anyone about that site or accused them of “stealing” and I certainly never asked the site to remove information. The only thing I can think of is that some offhand comment I made, possibly even years ago, got misinterpreted and reported back to this woman.

Something similar happened several weeks ago and I found myself having to defend (perfectly accurate) statements about another site, from an entry which I had posted on my blog in 2009. The problem I’d complained about (which was not related to plagiarism) had long since been fixed, but someone “heard” that I “trashed” the site “every chance I got.”

Sigh. It’s very annoying.

Could be someone using your id to cause trouble. Could be a troll. Could be one of those sites I’M now trashing that take all your work and copy/paste it. I wouldn’t worry about it. What, they’re going to sue you? My guess would be get in line. What really pisses me off is that anyone that is serious about MP’s would be working together to share info and bring these people home, not bitch about the conditions or circumstances. Sounds like fifth grade playground to me. I hate that stuff. Oops, did I sound defensive :)?

I hate to put it this way, but welcome to the Internet. I’m interested in the Ray Gricar disappearance and there is a site out there that mentions me more than Mr. Gricar.

Often times, a quick e-mail or call can help.

I had asked M. about this a while back and she hadn’t heard anything….I had seen an article in my local paper that said they were “reopening” per say his disappearance, reinterviewing witness, and the like. Any insight (or “site” as it may be)? I find this case very interesting because of how high profile he was, plus the circumstances of disappearance. Also, I can’t help thinking of that one lawyer or DA or whatever who was found killed outside of his car a while back. Doubt they connected, but still.

Gad, my spelling is bad. Just fill in the blanks, and sorry! It’s late for me.

Kat, there is an ongoing investigation, and an active blog on it at the newspaper. The local rumors and some of the public comment from the current DA, and looking at what LE is investigating, points to a voluntary departure. I still have very big doubts that Mr. Gricar simply walked away, but I’d still say it is the more likely explanation.
