Jack Daniel Phillips article

I found this article about the disappearance of Jack Daniel “J.D.” Phillips, who was nine years old when he disappeared from Big Bear Lake, California in 1995. They’re still not sure whether he got kidnapped or just got lost in the wilderness. The article doesn’t contain much in the way of new information, but there is a new picture.

WHITTIER – A 31-year old Fullerton man accused of strangling a Placentia woman and then burying her body in Santa Clarita more than 10 years ago, pled not guilty Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court in Whittier.

Christopher Michael McAmis is charged with one felony count of murder in the death of 20-year old Fullerton College student Lynsie Ekelund, who was reported missing by her mother after not returning home from a trip to San Diego with friends on Feb. 16, 2001.

McAmis faces life in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors allege that McAmis killed Ekelund, and disposed of her body after a night out at a San Diego club during the early morning hours of Feb. 17, 2001.

McAmis, who knew Eklelund, first told police that he dropped her off on the corner near her home early in the morning on Feb. 17. The case went cold.

The Placentia Police Department in 2008 partnered with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and new evidence was turned up.

After his arrest last October, McAmis told police that when Ekelund had rebuffed his sexual advances, there was a struggle and he strangled her, authorities said.

Authorities said McAmis took them to a remote area of Santa Clarita after his arrest and pointed out where he had buried Ekelund. The student’s remains were exhumed and identified in early November.

The case is being prosecuted in Los Angeles County, where authorities believe Ekelund was killed.
