Guilty plea in Walter Ackerson case

The News Tribune says Troy Culver has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of 16-year-old Walter Ackerson, who disappeared from Nye Beach, Oregon in 1990. I’ve written about this case before. Walter and Troy were in the Job Corps and they left the campus with two other guys, Geoff Calligan and Eric Forsgren, without permission. The other three boys returned without Walter and said he had run away. It took close to twenty years to determine the truth: that Troy killed Walter in an argument and, with the help of the other two, tossed his body off a bridge.

Troy has been sentenced to ten years in prison. Unfortunately, the two accomplices can’t face any charges. In a way, I have more respect for Troy, the actual killer. He broke the case himself by voluntarily coming to the police and confessing to his crime. The others, who would have faced far smaller consequences, kept their cowardly mouths shut.

It’s disgusting. If the police and the Job Corps had done their job correctly at the onset of the investigation, this would have been solved long ago and Walter’s body would possibly have been found. The Job Corps in particular didn’t so much drop the ball has hurl it away with great force.

I agree. I also think those other two guys got off lightly. Okay so their names were exposed though and if they had wives etc you would be pretty disgusted …

I believe I heard it said once…”how well do you really know the person you are sleeping with”. Nuff said. I don’t blame the wives for not knowing and any kids are of course totally innocent…but the perps should go down, and hard. They killed this kid, then lied, and lied and lied. It’s amazing they all kept the stories together this long, usually one will fess up esp. with time and distance. They all had a life this kid should have had. There are times I hate the limitations of justice.

I agree with you. People act deaf, dumb, and blind so that they won’t get into trouble. The two who kept their mouths shut are fart worse than the person who actually pulled the trigger.

Shoot! I just realized my spelling mistake. I meant to say “The two who kept their mouths shut are far worse than the one who actually pulled the trigger.”

Respect for the killer? I damn him!
On September 12, 2001 Troy Culver raped and tortured me, He called my escort line and made an appointment with me, he had broken into one of his associates from A.A. apartment and had me come there, upon entering the apartment, he told me to have a seat on the couch, when I turned around he had a semi-automatic rifle in my face and proceeded to handcuff me behind my back. Troy was watching the movie “American Pie” the whole time he raped and sodomized and tortured me. The worst part was when he got me up off of the floor and led me to the bathroom, set me down on the toilet and grabbed the duct tape. I was terrified. I kept trying to bargain with him to let me go, humanize myself to him, eventually he let me go. Unfortunate for me that was not the end of my ordeal, as the officer drove me away and I mistakenly thought I was safe, a drunk driver hit the police car I was in head on. The officer went to check on the driver who’s truck had spun through thick trees.
The dust from the airbags had filled the interior of the car and I
thought it was smoke since it was night time and I thought the car was on fire, I couldn’t get out and started screaming and the officer ran back and opened the door and let me out, my knees were bruised badly from the backseat of the police car, at this point I was in total shock.
The police showed up at the scene and relieved the officer involved in the accident while I sat on the curb for over an hour, instead of taking me to the hospital, they took me to the precinct to finish getting my statement where they re-victimized me because I am a prostitute basically treating me as if I deserved what happened to me. When they were done with my statement the police drove me back to my car. I then drove myself to the hospital. The next day I was still in shock and since I thought that he had raped and tortured me in his house, I went back to the apartment and destroyed it. I was arrested and charged with Trespassing. Taunya Hall

I am deeply sorry for what happened to you. I wish your case had been taken more seriously than it was. A woman gets raped, then she gets raped again by “the system.”

      It happened to me too.

The whole thing is disgusting. The one man is in our military. Don’t they have a code? He was questioned while in the military and he lied. So when he finally told the truth, isn’t that behavior unbecoming? Shouldn’t he be striped of his uniform and benifits. National guard my butt, you couldn’t even stick up for one kid getting beaten to death!
