Alas, no new leads in Jacob Wetterling case

This past summer there was a lot of activity in the Jacob Wetterling kidnapping case. He was eleven years old when he was abducted at gunpoint by a masked man in 1989, and there’s been no trace of him since. The cops were searching a local property pretty extensively, where a “person of interest” had lived. Everyone hoped for a break in the case.

But it was not to be. This article quotes the police basically saying their search found zilch, nothing, nada. As to whether the person of interest — an elementary school music teacher — is off the hook, no word. Of course he maintains his innocence.

There is a two-part interview by the local t.v. station that interviews the main “person of interest”, Dan Rassier. You can read the transcript or look to the right to watch the interview. To put it mildly, I don’t think the police should quit looking at this guy as a suspect in Jacob’s disappearance.

Would like to hear what other posters think of it?

“Off the hook” ?… This man’s life is destroyed forever. No matter what he does or where he goes.

I meant off the hook as in no longer considered a suspect by the police. You well may be right about his reputation with the general public.

Did Dan Rassier do everything he possibly could to clear himself? It took him 20 years, by his own admission, to even speak to Jacob’s mom, Patty Wetterling- who happens to be his neighbor. Based on the interview he recently gave, if you were a detective working the case, would you dismiss him so easily? There are some major questions that have never been answered by Mr. Rassier (and he admitted as much during the interview). This is definitely one of the strangest cases on here.

This case has always haunted me. It was SO odd, the circumstances and all being rather unique (oxymoron, I know). I always thought they would find SOMETHING or that dude would try it again somewhere else. Maybe he did and we oon’t know yet. Or maybe he’s dead/in jail. I feel for Jacob’s family. I wish something would give in this case. I think one of the 20/20s they now air on WE covered that case a while back.

The case always reminded me of case of Ludovic Janvier, who was kidnapped in France in the early 80ies.
He was also kidnapped in front of others. And the man knew his name.
Making me think, he stalked Ludovic for while as Jacob was probably stalked.

How do you know Dan Rassier is “off the hook”. I mean it´s no wonder they can´t find anything after over twenty years. As far as I know this man has been a person of interest since 1989. Did you know that Dan Rassier is the witness who told police there was a car at the scene? The car that had nothing to do with the abduction.

Here they say he is still the person of interest even after the police didn´t find anything in the search.

I´m thinking maybe the kidnapper didn´t mean to kill Jacob. The man who molested the 12-year-old boy in St. Clouds let him go and if the kidnapper of Jacob is the same man, maybe he intended to let him go too. But something happeneed, maybe Jacob identified him.
