Babysitter arrested in Pilar Rodriguez case

As was announced today, Pilar Rodriguez‘s babysitter, Melissa Cooper (now Melissa Jones or Harding-Jones), has been charged with killing her. Melissa had taken Pilar on vacation with her and her boyfriend, Keith Allen Wilson, in 1999 and Pilar vanished sometime during the trip. Melissa and Keith have been blaming each other for it ever since. Melissa married after Pilar’s disappearance, had a couple of kids and now lives in Washington state.

I’m surprised it was Melissa who was arrested, because for years the cops have been focusing on Keith. She’s charged with aggravated manslaughter and faces a 30-year sentence if convicted. Articles:

Poor Pilar. I still don’t understand why the sitter would want to take her on vacation, and why the father didn’t report her missing right when she didn’t come back after the two weeks were up. Her file says she left on January 30 for two weeks but he didn’t call the police till the 22.
And if this Wilson was so mean to Melissa, why in god’s green earth would she knowingly put Pilar anywhere near him?
Pilar was failed by just about everyone who was suposed to care for her.

I believe Pilar’s father was either homeless or very close to it at the time. He may have thought she was better off with the babysitter until he got back on his feet.

It is not always the man who commits these haneous crimes.

Maybe he wasn’t so mean to her. Just her story to put blame on him.

Presumably the truth will come out at trial.

What I dont understand is what about the childs mother? if the father was homeless as they say then why not let the mother keep the child? Why was the babysitter permitted by the mother to take the child out of state? And like others have stated why did it take so long for the father to report his child missing? Something smells really fishy in this story. I think they should investigate the whole story and maybe they will find the answers to why this all happened.

I don’t know where the mother was, but Dad had custody. From what I have read he was a devoted father in very unfortunate circumstances. He’s been ruled out as a suspect in Pilar’s disappearance.

Disgusting, I can’t believe how flawed the justice system is. These 2 child killers have pointed the finger at each other for 10 years, but because there was a lack of evidence they got to go free? The justice system is seriously responsible for more people being harmed than it protects.
