Alright, nobody panic

Remember how a little over a week ago my bank account got broken into? Well, the account is still on hiatus. The bank sent a new debit card but they send the stuff to activate it in a separate mailing for security purposes and the activation letter hasn’t arrived. Ergo, I have no bank account at present. And I believe credit cards are the offspring of the devil, so I don’t have any of those either.

So the long and short of it is, my host was unable to bill me for Charley’s monthly hosting costs and they’ve suspended my account. Splerd. I was hoping my bank would put together a new account for me before the bill came due. But never fear. I borrowed one of my father’s credit cards and went on there and put in the information. However, it will be a few hours before everything gets back on.

So this is why, when you try to go to Charley right now, it says “suspended domain.” It’s all the stupid identity thief’s fault.

Last time my domain got suspended (because my debit card had expired), I got like a kajillion emails from people who were either worried or angry about it, and my host got emails too from people begging him, out of the goodness of his heart, to please put Charley back online.

    Hey

I was actually watching the site when it was suddenly closed. Any info on when it will be opened again?

whew! Scared me…..again! I went to the site several times, then tried only the blog site…. I’m sooooo sorry you are having the problem. I agree with you on credit cards, so you are doing everything right. Too bad you are paying so much with you time and effort.

Again, you are doing a great job! Things will get better!

I always use credit cards for all payments and purchases. I only use my debit cards to get cash from the ATM machine at my bank. I suppose if you’re irresponsible with credit cards and carry balances from month to month, you shouldn’t have one. But at least with credit cards, if some thief uses up all the money on it, it’s not all my money, it’s the banks money. And since my credit card is at a different bank than my checking account, the bank can’t empty my account to pay off the credit card.

    WHEW! That was a relief!
I got quite a surprise this morning! My first message of the day was a comment for my blog, asking me why the Charley Project website has been suspended. (I moderate all comments due to trolls and spam) I didn’t even know about it until then.

    http://friendsofdebbie.blogspot.com/2009/10/birthday-for-charley-project.html

I had assumed this anonymous visitor had tried the blog as well as the website, before hitting the comment button to ask me about it, so I sent an email to Meaghan to ask her. Later, I tried the link to the blog, and it worked.

Well, I’m sure glad to know this is but a temporary problem!

I have to admit I did panic there for awhile. I have been getting more than usual spam comments trying to get into my blog since New Year’s, and had paranoid thoughts about someone attacking websites about missing persons.

I was panic stricken too so I’m glad, sooo glad to hear you’ll be back up and running soon.

Ah, good. It is always at the back of my mind that one day Meghan will wake up and decided that she is burnt out and cannot continue to keep doing Charley anymore and was moving to Bhutan to live in a monastery as a monastic.

If she did though, I would probably expect to see a long explanation on this blog.

I had a wierd dream last night that some person was doing their master’s thesis on the Charley Project and Meaghan and the person was getting fustrated because Meaghan kept having to go to work and was afraid of her pet pitbull mix who kept barking every time the interviewer had to move.

    • Meaghan January 28, 2010 / 2:41 am

I think a monastic life would suit me very well, if you cut out the prayer bit. I’d very very good at remaining celibate and sitting in my little cell contemplating and studying. But I believe Buddhist nuns have to shave their heads, and I would miss my hair as it is my best feature.

Meaghan did leave for a while when she worked on a book. That seemed like a long time but we understood there were things she had to do. Now, I can’t really remember when, exactly, that was. You’re right, in that she did write a long explanation, which was good b/c we needed to know why she wasn’t updating.

It’s human nature for us to get attached and that’s what happened, so eventhough the situation wasn’t good, it’s nice to know we are all attached to one another.
….Sooo glad it’s back up and working.

That is a pretty weird dream, Justin.
This poor girl has really been through a lot of crap, hasn’t she? And what really bothers me most is knowing that she doesn’t deserve any crap.
    Hang in there, Meaghan!

Dreams can be very, very wierd. There was more to the dream, but that was all I could remember. I woke up thinking WTF? and tried to figure out what my subconscious was trying to tell me for a minute or so until I had to get up and get ready for work.

I remember a Wim Wenders film titled “Until the End of the World” that had a machine that could record a persons dreams and play them back. People got addicted to watching the recordings like a drug. If I had such a machine, I think I would probably spend all my time doing that as well.

      • danielle January 28, 2010 / 3:01 pm

Do you have a dream dictionary? I have them and use them……I’d love to see the film about dreams.
When I kept a dream journal, my dreams eventually got more detailed (unless I remembered more details).
        Very interesting.

whew! I figured it was something like that. But what a huge relief to get
this incredibly valuable site back for cross-references .

  9. Bill January 28, 2010 / 4:04 pm

Justin – Here is my interpretation of your dream.
Meaghan is obviously a person you think about, or you wouldn’t be dreaming about her. In your dream you see her with three things going on at once that demanded her attention, her interview, her job, and her dog. I’d say you were feeling a concern that she was getting stretched too thin, which is something that can lead to burn-out. You had expressed such a concern at the beginning of your comment.

Meaghan – I’m sure your hair is very nice, but I’d have to say your best feature is your heart.

We can has site updates plz?

  11. Humbled Observer January 28, 2010 / 4:51 pm

I know this is an inappropriate place to send a possible tip, but I am a very shy person and could never call the phone number listed about her case. (I’d stutter my way through it!!)

Concerning Yeritza Aponte-Soto, just updated here Jan 26th 2010.

It mentions she was last seen carrying a blue backpack.

On the doenetwork.org website, their Jan. 27th 2010 updates page lists a girl who’s skeletal remains were found in Arizona in 2003. In fact, she is the first person listed on the page. This Jane Doe is very similar in physical characteristics, but what caught my eye was that this girl was also found with a blue backpack.

If anyone else who reads this agrees the coincidence it worth persuing please call the people who need to know.

    • danielle January 28, 2010 / 7:07 pm

excellent observation! I love the doenetwork…. Hopefully something will come of your observation

      • maureen January 28, 2010 / 9:09 pm

Did you contact doenetwork? I’d love to know how this turns out.

  12. Humbled_Observer January 28, 2010 / 10:25 pm

I tried to contact people at doe network, but their links don’t seem to work. I think you have to be a member to send in a tip directly to them.

Becoming a member involves filling out a form and getting it notarized and sending it in.

However, doe network does provide the phone number to the medical examiners office involved in her case. I’m just too shy to call.

Her case file# at Doe Network is:
    718UFAZ

    • Justin January 29, 2010 / 12:43 am

Humbled_Observer, all you need to do is contact the Pima County Medical Examiners Office by email and give them the information.

According to her NamUs webpage at https://identifyus.org/cases/6446?page=images, the PCMEO contact is Bruce Anderson at bruce.anderson@pima.gov and the case number is ML03-2034.

Just say that you noticed that Yeritza Aponte-Soto whose webpage on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at http://www.missingkids.com/missingkids/servlet/PubCaseSearchServlet?act=viewChildDetail&caseNum=1112065&orgPrefix=NCMC&seqNum=1&caseLang=en_US&searchLang=en_US mentions that she went missing with a blue backpack like his unidentified female he posted to NamUs.

Believe me, I have sent various emails to LE about possible matches of missing persons to unidentifed remains. If I get a response, it is usually that they thank me for the information and will look into it, or that the connection has already been investigated and they thank me anyway.
You don’t need to give them your phone number.

By the way, I am also fairly shy and would rather email people. Don’t worry about it.

You don’t need to be a member of the Doe Network to contact them. Last time I checked, you could contact the Area Directors by their email addresses or if you want to send a tip, email them at doenetadminteam@gmail.com

Still, if this is too much for you, I’m pretty sure Meaghan would be happy to contact them on your behalf. Just say the word.

      Good Luck.

    Thanks Justin, very informative…..

    I followed your advice 🙂
