Only six degrees of separation?

I thought it was cool when I found out I know someone who knows someone who went to Oxford with the Crown Prince (now King) of Bhutan. My friend said her friend said the Prince was a jerk, which I guess is to be expected.

But now I’ve found out I know someone who knows someone who went to primary school with Daniel Radcliffe! That’s even cooler. Everyone knows who Daniel Radcliffe is. No one knows who the King of Bhutan is, and most of them don’t even know Bhutan is a country in Asia. My friend said her friend said Daniel Radcliffe was an “emotionally stunted weirdo.”

It’s a pity I don’t personally know anyone really famous. Robert Cormier was only semi-famous (about as famous as a young adult author can be, but that’s not saying much) and he is now deceased.

Oooooh I don’t like to hear that about Daniel Ratcliff! How can he be a wierdo when hs is so cute???! Harry Potter rules!

Brianna, it’s naught to do with Daniel, I am almost certain–due to (ahem) a slight spelling difference–but the Ratcliff (or Ratcliffe) Highway Murders in 1811 shocked all of London. The suspect did not make that final journey to Tyburn Hill, however. He hanged himself in his cell and was buried with a stake through his heart. Though there IS magic in that.

The suspect probably didn’t do it either.

Not everyone knows who Daniel Radcliffe is. I had to google his name. I’ve never read Harry Potter or seen any of the movies.

Now, I just can not see him or Harry Potter movies anymore without remembering the pics! Why do I have such weirdos for friends dangit!?

There use to be this goofy weatherman on our local tv station, kinda old and funny looking. Well one day me and some friends were at a nude beach and who do we see but Bob the weather guy! They dared me to go up and talk to him so I did! I just walked up and asked are you Bob the weather guy? and he smiled and said yea thats me! He was very nice, but he was even funnier looking naked then he was dressed! lol

I have three near brushes with near fame. First was when I was about 11 and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Back then, we had a local TV personality whose name was Bob Wilkins who did the Saturday night midnight screening of a show called Creature Features on KTVU Channel 2. Anyone who grew up in the Bay Area in the ’70’s who had a television will probably remember the name. Anyway, he did that and one of the last weekday afternoon shows where he became a guy called Captain Cosmic where he dressed up in this space outfit and showed reruns of Flash Gordon and these Japanese flying robot serials. To a kid who hadn’t hit puberty, this guy was more impressive than the president. He had a kid who went to one of the elementary schools near where I lived and managed to get some old Godzilla movie to show in the school auditorium for about a buck a head for some fundraiser. He walked right by me and I was too intimidated to say anything.

My second brush with fame was in Seattle back in the late ’90’s where there was a theatre production of Grease and Erik Estrada was one of the cast. I walked by the theatre and he was outside signing autographs. I wasn’t all that impressed and didn’t slow down. Now if Bob Wilkins was out there, I might have stopped and said something, but the guy from CHIPs didn’t move me.

The last was also in Seattle in the late ’90’s and the most impressive. I was in a Borders Bookstore and was in line to buy a book. I normally didn’t buy new books and prefer to spend my time in used bookstores (lets here it for Twice Sold Tales! I miss you Jamie and Biff), but I had gotten a gift certificate and pretty much had to use it. I was standing in line and noticed that the guy ahead of me was a dead ringer for Bill Gates. I kept thinking that couldn’t be him, that it was just someone who looked a LOT like him. You don’t expect Bill Gates of Microsoft to be buying magazines at a downtown Borders. When he made his purchase, I went up to the cashier and said “Wasn’t that…” and before I had a chance to say his name, he said “Yeah, that was him”. Whoa.

Thus, were my brushes with greatness. I am humbled.

I am an actor and I can guarantee most actors, famous or not are weirdos. And I’ve met a LOT of em. ( In fact apart from my husband – a musician, all my friends are actors.)

Its to do with the constant craving of attention, combined with crippling insecurity.

I count myself among the weirdos, incidentally.

And Meaghan- you are kind of famous yourself!

Yes, Meaghan is a star to us!

  8. John the Revelator October 15, 2009 / 4:08 pm

In regards the Ratcliffe Highway Murders above, not a guilty person in Newgate, eh, Meaghan? (Or Coldbath Fields, for that matter.) Yes, “The Maul and the Pear Tree” is a fine book, but its surmise (that Williams was not guilty) seems merely an effective hook for advertisements in the trade papers. The innocent rarely commit suicide before justice can take its course.

    • Meaghan October 15, 2009 / 8:29 pm

I haven’t read the book — or ever heard of it. I’ve just seen mentions/synopses of the case in other books. From what I recall, there was some doubt as to whether Williams actually killed himself at all.

Oh, who cares? The ORIGINAL topic is too cool. LI always thought it was creepy for me to like DR. cause he bears an uncanny resemblance to my brother. But i still love Harry!
