As noted by one blog commenter, one person who emailed me, and Google News search, Brooke Wilberger’s body has been found. She was nineteen years old and between her freshman and sophomore year at Brigham Young University when she was abducted from an apartment complex parking lot in Corvallis, Oregon May 2004. The case got a lot of attention at the time, because of the sensational nature of the crime and because Brooke was the kind of victim the media loves: young, innocent, Christian, middle-class, blonde and very beautiful. Just like a slightly older Elizabeth Smart. They were both Mormons, even.
Joel Patrick Courtney was charged with Brooke’s murder in 2005. Well, this month he pleaded guilty and lead the police to her body. He will be in prison for the rest of his days. I’ve heard that Courtney is considered a possible serial killer and a suspect in the disappearance of Katheryn “Katie” Eggleston, but I don’t know if anything came of that lead.
Anyway…may Brooke rest in peace.
Her poor family. What an evil person. And he kept her over night. Thanks for your excellent work, Meaghan. It is so appreciated. Keep up the great work:)
I’m sorry to admit this, but I must say that I thought that she would never be found, because that creep seemed like the type of person to never give her up, especially after all this time. What a completely awful case that gives me the chills: the fact that she was taken in broad daylight while doing daily chores with her family is so sad. My heart goes out to them. I’m glad she’s found, but no one deserves a fate like that or left to wonder for any amount of time what happened to their loved one. Rest in peace, Brooke.
And it’s important to note that he probably wouldn’t have given up her location, ever, except that he was offered a plea bargain in exchange for leading police to her body. Narcissistic sociopathic piece of garbage. He didn’t give a shit what her family went through; he only gave them closure because it served a purpose for him.
Now that Courtney has nothing to lose, perhaps he’ll disclose details of his other crimes and we’ll find out whether he’s really a serial killer or not. Or perhaps he’ll take the secrets to his grave.
I remember this case because she went missing on my birthday.
Very chilling-to think it was in broad daylight-you’d think someone
would have seen!
Very tragic, but great that her family got closure. At least they now have somewhere to go to to visit her. Many families do not ever get that. My heart goes out to Brooke and her family.
I hope more of these cases get closure-Im hoping that Jacob Wetterling, Jodi Huisentruit or Deanie Peters will soo be resolved. Those cases are opened and they are well overdue. I also hope the Rachel Mellon case can be solved. After reading it, I realized how easily it could have been solved. Very frustating.
Fabulous work Meaghan! 🙂
Joel makes me want to vomit.
Hey Meaghan, I just found out you use to run another website about Children Who Never Made It Home. I’m reading the old casefiles. Very nice tribute to those who are gone but not forgotten.
And then today Danice Day. It’s quite a week for the cold cases, though all the bargaining going on for these recovery efforts is rather disturbing.
Well I’m glad he did reveal the location of the body.
I’m glad the family has that closure.
And I’m glad that nasty POS will never kill anyone again.
I can’t believe they found her.
