Missing teen girls

The recent articles about Nancy Scamurra and Sharon Pretorius inspired me to look at other older cases involving teen girls whom I don’t have very much information on. There are a lot of them.

Fawn Abell, 15, and her sister Rozlin, 18, missing from Oklahoma since 1985. They went out to look for jobs and never came back.
Ellen Akers, 15, missing from Florida since 1981. She asked her mom for money to see a movie but it’s not clear whether she actually went to the movie or not. I wonder if anyone has looked at Christopher Wilder as a suspect.
Teresa Alfonso, 12, and her friend Cynthia Gooding, 16, missing from Florida since 1974. One of the girls, not sure which, had run away before and the police thought they’d done it again, but foul play is now suspected in their cases.
Anna Anderson, 19, missing from California since 1983. No details.
Barbara Barkley, 19, missing from Florida since 1981. Her car was later found abandoned. She is presumed dead.
Donna Barnhill, 13, missing from North Carolina since 1981. The police seem to think her family was involved. One of Donna’s sisters in 1966 of what was later found to be a child abuse homicide. Both of Donna’s parents are now deceased.
Ramona Beal, 15, missing from California since 1985. Foul play is suspected; she was a witness at a criminal trial.
Susan Bender, 14, missing from California since 1985. Some of her stuff was found at a suspect’s home after her disappearance, but nothing could be proved against him.
Lurline Bergeron, 14, missing from Florida since 1991. She was a chronic runaway.
Theresa Bier, 16, missing from Californa since 1987. Bigfoot got her, so they say.
Kimberly Billy, 19, missing from California since 1984. No details.
Jackie Boyer, 12, missing from California since 1980. No details.
Diana Braungardt, 18, missing from Missouri since 1987. Last seen walking to her car after leaving work.
Joyce Brewer, 15, missing from Texas since 1970. I have nothing on this case, zip, nada, zilch.
Niki Britten, 15, missing from Oregon since 1969. I just put her up yesterday. She’s classified as a runaway.
Laronda Bronson, 18, missing from Oregon since 1982. One inevitably suspects the Green River Killer.
Mary Burnette, 16, missing from Alabama since 1984. She ran away from home and the last trace of her was an arrest in Atlanta in 1985.
Hattie Burton, 19, missing from Florida since 1988. She was pregnant.
Sandra Butler, 16, missing from Nevada since 1978. Offhand I wonder if Royal Russell Long might have been involved in this case as well. She seems to fit the profile.
Teresa Byers, 18, missing from Texas since 1979. No details; I don’t even have a date of disappearance here, just a range of months.
Cynthia Carmack, 16, missing from Ohio since 1988. No details.
Vicki Carriere, 18, missing from Louisiana since 1987. No details.
Kimberly Carter, 19, missing from Missouri since 1984. She had a high-risk lifestyle and ran with a rough crowd.
Pollyanne Carter, 15, missing from Washington since 1984. She had a runaway history but it’s not clear whether she ran away this time.
Miriam Cavallo, 19, missing from California since 1983. No details.
Angela Chan, 19, missing from Oregon since 1989. Suspicious circumstances.
Patricia Chesher, 12, missing from New Mexico since 1969. Classified as a runaway.
Dorothy Clitheroe, 14, missing from Arizona since 1973. She might have gone to Oregon or Texas after her disappearance.
Sharaun Cole, 12, missing from New York since 1983. I wrote a blog entry a few days ago on the sad paucity of details in her disappearance.
Cynthia Constantine, 15, missing from New York since 1969. Last seen walking her dog.
Cynthia Coon, 13, missing from Michigan since 1970. What few details I have are bizarre: she called her family twice a few months after her disappearance, but said she didn’t know where she was. A month after that they got an “extortion type phone call,” whatever that is.
Barbara Cotton, 15, missing from North Dakota since 1981. The prime suspect in her disappearance is a former boyfriend and he is now dead.
Brenda Crowley, 16, missing from New York since 1980. Very unclear circumstances; she and her siblings were in and out of foster care, group homes, etc. She wasn’t reported missing till 1994.
Thwana Darrough, 16, missing from Arkansas since 1989. Last seen walking to school.
Mary Day, 12, missing from California since 1980. No details; not even a date of disappearance.

Martha Dunn, 15, missing from Texas since 1990. Classified as a runaway.
Diane Dye, 14, missing from California since 1979. A friend claims she saw her alive and well in 1981, but there’s been no sign of her since then.
Christine Eastin, 19, missing from California since 1971. She disappeared while in the middle of washing her car. Foul play is suspected, but there’s very little evidence available.
Lillian Estrada, 16, missing from California since 1990. No details.
Karen Evan, 18, missing from Alaska since 1980. No details.
Theresa Fishbach, 18, missing from Texas since 1986. The last word from her was a card she sent her mom for Mother’s Day.
Jennifer Floyd, 19, missing from Mississippi since 1988. She left a young child, with the usual statements that she wouldn’t have abandoned it like that.
Debra Frost, 17, missing from Utah since 1984. She was going to hitchhike to her boyfriend’s workplace but never arrived there.
Janice Fullam, 17, missing from New York since 1981. She had a warrant out for her arrest at the time of her disappearance, but it seems unlikely that that would keep her in hiding for this long.

Brenda Green, 15, missing from Alabama since 1988. Last seen standing on a friend’s doorstep; the friend wasn’t home.

Shaunda Green, 13, missing from Michigan since 1983. Classified as a runaway.
Mary Gregory, 18, missing from Ontario, Canada since 1978. Profiled on Charley because she apparently traveled around the U.S. after she went missing.
Teresa Hammon, 19, missing from California since 1981. Considered a possible homicide.
Terrie Hefner, 19, missing from Texas since 1984. She may have gone to Louisiana after her disappearance.
Lorraine Herbster, 17, missing from New Jersey since 1979. Last seen on her way home from work.
Cynthia Hernandez, 18, missing from California since 1976. The police think a serial killer may have been involved.
Ashley Higgins, 19, missing from California since 1982. No details.

Kimberly Kahler, 15, missing from California since 1980. No details. The date of disappearance is given as January 1, which makes me wonder if they actually have a date; often they use January 1 when the date is unknown.

Stacey Kelekoma, 14, missing from Hawaii since 1986. Unusual circumstances, but classified as a runaway.

Last year, I had contacted Cheryl Moser-Iacovone’s half-sister via e-mail.

She indicated that there was an article in the Delco Daily Times in 1983 regarding Cheryl’s disappearance. However, I was unable to find that article online.

You amaze me with the level of research and care you put into Charley. Bless you for doing it – I know many families of missing persons appreciate yur hard work. I know I do.

There is an article in the google newspaper archives that states that Angela Westberry disappeared with 18 year old Theresa Hickman who is a caucasian female.

    http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=lCQjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=LM8FAAAAIBAJ&pg=6591,1384092&dq=missing+angela+westberry&hl=en

The facebook page set up for Teresa Alfonso states that Cynthia Gooding has a history of running away. It also gives other theories that the family and police have investigated over the years about what happened to the 2 of them.

According to the Doe Network, Joyce Brewer may have run off with a boyfriend.

I haven’t heard anything about Maria Martinez( Los Angeles). I grew up not far where she went missing from and it was not even publicized. Anyone heard of anything it would be greatly appreciated….
Or even Brandy Lynne Myers. Phoenix has had an issue with cute Blonde Haired glasses girls who go missing, and are either found dead or have been missing for decades(Mikelle Bigg anyone?) Just curious thanks!

    • Meaghan June 24, 2011 / 3:28 am

I know a guy who’s a detective with the Phoenix PD and I asked him for detail about Brandy Myers, and he promised to look it up for me, but I guess he forgot or something.

As for Maria, unfortunately there have got to be hundreds of Maria Martinezes living in Los Angeles. Even if there were some articles about it, they’d be hard to find.

      • Jill Volker June 25, 2011 / 8:57 pm

Thank you Meaghan! I really do appreciate it, if you need anymore contacts about AZ, feel free to email me a close friend of mine is an intern for the cold case dept for the Phx PD.

The saddest thing of all is that many of these missing kids (boys included) are murder victims. Along with the ones still out in the elements who’s bodies have never been recovered, there are over 40,000 men, women & children that FBI & NamUS talks about, whom are currently either lying in coroners officers all around the country, or who have already been buried as Jan & John Does over the decades who’s families have never received answers or justice. And for everyone murdered, there are killers out there still roaming free. Thank God for the advancements of DNA technology, but many police departments across the country still don’t have the time or money to follow up with all surviving missing persons families to get their DNA on file to identify their loved ones. It’ sad & scary to think hat we live in such a disposable society that people can kill like that and go about their lives as if it’s nothing.

  9. 10fMenny June 27, 2011 / 6:32 pm

A question Meaghan, out of the total missing persons, how many can you not put up on the Charley Project because of the lack of photos? I’m asking because as time goes on it seems easier to find photos than even say a few years ago. Thank you.

    • Meaghan June 27, 2011 / 6:38 pm

Gosh, hundreds. Thousands, maybe. Probably there are many more MPs without photos than with them. Like the Florida and Washington databases have many cases listed, but hardly any have photos.

  10. 10fMenny June 27, 2011 / 7:33 pm

I think it’s sad maybe more could be found or maybe some of the older MPs do not want to be found,I mean some left. On a personal note, even growing I didn”t have lots of pictures taken and now as a adult, I rarely let pictures be taken. Thank you for answering my question.

If you’re looking for more info about the disappearance of Micki West, one of the earliest episodes of “Unsolved Mysteries” did a very creepy segment on her. A bunch of anonymous letters were left in various public places from someone who claimed to have witnessed Micki’s murder, but it’s believed they were actually written by the confessed killer himself, Marvin Lee Irvin.

  14. Crystal August 24, 2011 / 2:13 am

What about lists of unidentified remains found would that be helpful.

Teresa Alfonso, is my sister. i never met her because she went missing long before i was born (in 1990). i have some interesting suspicions about what happened to her, but my brother and i are trying to figure out how we could maybe get the investigation re opened (we dont have the same mother as her). i dont think she is alive, but i still would like some closure on this matter and unfortunately the one who has always handled the case is who i believe had a great deal to do with her disappearance. im trying now just to see what mention is online of her from other sources because my brother told me he actually found some interesting things that support what i have always thought. our father died 10 months ago and terry’s mom always made him feel like this was somehow his fault, so id like to one day be able to say i got him “closure”even tho he doesnt need it at this point

Take a look at James Mitchell DeBardeleben for the abduction of Teresa Alfonso and Cynthia Gooding. When the Secret Service of the USA arrested him in 1976 they went looking for a printing press as manufacturing funny money gets a criminal more time then the act of passing. They found his printing press in his Arlington, VA home – and they found a rape room – with lots of homemade pornography and loaded guns and other materials. The Secret Service did nothing about his sex crimes in 1976. They let him loose on America again in May of 1978 – and Florida was his first place to go murder – Patricia Action in Clearwater. The Secret Service of the USA is sitting on 6,000 photographs of DeBardeleben torturing girls and women and something like 70 boxes of evidence. They have 1,000 different victims photographed. These girls are very likely victims of the marriage between DeBardeleben’s sadism and the Secret Services best kept secret.

I am sure now that a man who approached me for a photo layout on a beach in North carolina was Christopher Wilder.. I let it pass without much thought until i saw a TV story showing him talking in a video-it gave me that same feeling I had when he talked to me 30 years ago! Although he was very smooth and seemed harmless at the time something about it unnerved me-thank God-pay attention to initial instincts-be safe I got online to see if there was any record of him in NC and found this site-my prayers are with all here who havesuffered and lost. I hopr you find closure and peaxe

sharaun taree cole fits the discription and time frame of a girl found in st louis mo in 1983. her body was found in an old abandon warehouse decapitated. she is still a jane doe. its a long shot but worth it. i have been working on this case since 1999 when i first read about it. just want to give that baby a name for her lil headstone.

      • anniefauxkley May 19, 2015 / 2:27 pm

And where did you hear/read this? Your assertion is impossible as there is no DNA, fingerprints, or dentals on file for Sharaun to be compared to any Jane Doe. Most likely the unidentified remains in St. Louis ARE Sharaun’s, but it is impossible to conclusively determine without any profile of Sharaun to compare to the UID.

      • forthelost May 19, 2015 / 3:14 pm

Thirdly, the doe was about four foot eleven, and Sharun was five foot six.

      • anniefauxkley May 26, 2015 / 9:31 pm

This could simply be bc the coroner was specifically measuring the remains after the head was removed rather than listing the estimated height of the remains for ID purposes. It might be the literal height of the body. It happens.

      • anniefauxkley May 26, 2015 / 10:50 pm

Respectfully im just confused bc NamUs says Sharaun has no DNA, Dentals, or Prints processed so I don’t know how she could possibly be conclusively ruled out. Are they just taking her families word for it? I tend to trust NamUs with the info about DNA and such. I’m just puzzled as to how they can 100% rule her out when she has nothing processed (per her NamUs profile) https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/5960/11/

      • anniefauxkley May 26, 2015 / 10:52 pm

If it’s a matter of NamUs just needing to update her profile maybe we should let them know?

      • forthelost May 27, 2015 / 5:54 pm

If the person who entered them into namus didn’t know the status of one or another, it’s listed as not available.

I have contacted the namus case manager about the discrepancy.

Thanks for all the work you do. I spend a lot of time looking through the cases posted to see if I can match to unidentified people or find info online… I just noticed a post for Vicki carriere, there is a fb account with that name in Canada. Lady resembles the missing Vicki but older. Just my opinion. Maybe check it out? Thanks

Good! Maybe they’ll get someone on the case that actually wants to solve it bc the original investigation seemed shoddy at best!

What was your friends name? Do you think your parents killed her? Why would a mother tell a childs friend to leave, on foot to travel hundreds of miles alone?

    Hi!
I live in WNY. I have been helping State Police in Batavia(cold case inv.) on a case of a woman who was recently id’d-after 31 years as a Jane Doe. Her body was found in wny(Shelby, NY) swamp area in Oct. 1983. They figured she’d been dead since end of June 1983.
Shari was a Jane Doe until dna id’d her in April 2014. Her name: Shari Lynne Ball-reported missing since she left her West Palm Beach Florida home, June 27th, 1983, to meet “a friend” in Boynton beach, Florida., who was taking her to NY to pursue a “modeling career”. She never gave his name. She called a friend two days after she left., in Ashland, Va. and was never heard or seen again.
Number one suspect-the now dead Christopher Wilder-spree killer.
My involvement? I met Christopher Wilder in summer of 1983 in wny(Lockport) ,(was hometown of Beauty Queen/teacher-Elizabeth kenyon-who was last seen with Christopher Wilder, she knew him-a friend) March 1984. Wilder was suspected of killing her.).
My friend and i were holding a yard sale in Lcokport, NY and Wilder drove up, got out, hnded us a modeling business card and introduced himself. He tried to get us to do modeling portfolios, and showed us photos of all the girls he’d supposedly done. We found him credible and charming-but something didn’t seem right and we turned him down. He went on. We can’t remeber exact date in summer of 1983 that this occuured unfortunately, but feel it was around same time as Shari disappeared and headed for Ny state.
I need to talk to anybody who may have encountered Wilder around same time as i did and Shari did-summer of 1983. It may absolutely id Wilder as Shari’s killer.!
I have a Facebook page devoted to Shari Lynne Ball-please visit! Called: Who Killed Shari Lynne Ball?
    Thank you!

      Hi Whistler:
I live in MD & remember the big story when Cynthia was identified in 2012, as she went missing from Tacoma Park, MD & all those years was known only as Haymarket, VA Jane Doe. I hope this 2002 link works from WJZ 13 news. Prior to NamUs, Kylen Johnson, owner of MarylandMissing.com, spoke of the need for one centralized database for the missing & unidentified. She stated in 2002 how someone could go missing from MD, located deceased in VA & not get identified for “5” years. Poor Cynthia took over 30 years to get her name back, but at least her family now has half of their answers. Thank God for technology & investigators who never give up.

One of the most terrifying cases on this list, in my opinion, is Maria Martinez…I had chills reading that one.

There is no doubt in my mind that she was lured into a dangerous situation under the cover of being given a babysitting job.
Poor kid thought she was going to make some extra money like many other girls her age, and some sicko took advantage of that.

I wonder about her parents. They must have been horrified to receive that phone call from her, saying that she wanted them to pick her up.
I must say though, I would NEVER allow my daughter to go anywhere with a complete stranger. I don’t care who it is.

And I’m not judging the parents because they have probably been going through a nightmare since she vanished in 1990…I’m just saying that we can’t be too careful in this world.
I wonder if they had any reservations about letting her take this “job” and allowing this man to pick her up.
My mom wasn’t always the most attentive parent when I was growing up but even she would have been like, “Wait a minute…something isn’t right about this”.

Because come on, really? Most parents, even those that give their daughters a lot of freedom, would be wary of the situation.
Let alone having a complete stranger come to your home to pick up your kid. Sometimes we can’t even trust people we DO know, so why take chances with a stranger?

It was obviously a trap set by a predator and this poor girl walked into it.

The Jane Doe that was found Jan, 1989 west of Sand Spring, OK buried near the Arkansas river was sadly identified a few years ago as Christine Miller.

  27. Slaybells January 6, 2019 / 7:58 am

    Cynthia Hernandez remains were found.
“Her remains were later found buried in the San Bernardino mountains near Allred’s family cabin but weren’t identified through DNA testing until 2014.”
